Wendake combines striking natural surroundings with places where the history and values of the Wendat Nation come to life. A waterfall in a deep canyon, a long riverside park and artistic depictions of Wendat culture offer different perspectives on the area. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether to focus on culture, nature or a mix of both.

Experience Wendat Heritage

The Musée huron-wendat is a national institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage of the Wendat Nation. If you would like to include more than a single museum visit in your trip, you can explore the museum’s two-hour discovery tour: knowledgeable guides take you to significant places in Wendake and make the tour immersive. Alongside the museum, the tour offers a guided exploration of various sites.

The Fresque du peuple Wendat at Place de la Nation Onywahtehretsih, near the Saint-Charles River, portrays the history and values of the Wendat. The animal sculptures at Place Onywahtehretsih offer another artistic perspective. Wendat artist Christine Sioui-Wawanoloath created figures symbolizing key characters from a founding myth of the Wendat Nation. Access to this square is free.

Historic buildings and living religious traditions are also part of Wendake’s cultural identity. Église Notre-Dame-de-Lorette is designated as a protected building and a national historic site, while continuing to serve as an active Catholic place of worship. Maison Tsawenhohi’ was built between 1807 and 1820. It is named after Nicolas Vincent Tsawenhohi, the first Grand Chief to live there.

Waterfall and River Landscapes

The Akiawenhrahk River waterfall is 28 metres high and lies in a 42-metre-deep canyon. A lookout point and secured stairways make it possible to view the waterfall and the remains there.

Parc linéaire de la Rivière-Saint-Charles offers a different perspective on nature. The 32-kilometre park follows the riverbanks through Québec City and Wendake and is divided into 13 sections. Numerous bird species can be observed there in all four seasons. The natural areas range from plains and canyons to marshes and vegetation, as well as waterfalls and geological formations. Its diversity is especially appealing to travellers who want to include nature watching and landscapes in their stay.

Different Experiences for Your Trip

For outdoor activities, some sections of Parc linéaire de la Rivière-Saint-Charles offer cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Winter activities are not described for the entire 32-kilometre park; they are available in specific areas. At the traditional Huron site Onhoüa Chetek8e, a snowshoeing and nature experience is offered from December to mid-March, exclusively by reservation. A guide leads visitors through the forest and introduces them to the surrounding natural environment.

Onhwa’ Lumina offers another way to discover Wendake. The 1.2-kilometre multimedia trail combines light, sound and video projections to celebrate the life and values of the Wendat Nation. It features ancestral rhythms and songs, as well as the Grand Cercle, a symbol of the connection between all living beings. This experience offers a different focus from a guided discovery tour or nature watching.

The annual Rendez-vous des Artisans et Artistes de Wendake is also aimed at culture enthusiasts: it brings together artisans and artists from various First Nations in Québec. The event includes arts and crafts workshops, demonstrations of traditional techniques and conferences. If you would like to include these activities in your trip, remember to take the event’s annual schedule into account when planning.

When looking for a vacation rental in Wendake, you can first decide which experiences you want to shape your stay: cultural sites and guided explorations, seasonal winter activities or nature watching along the river. This lets you choose accommodation to suit your planned trip without letting a single outing determine your entire stay. You can also discover Charlesbourg as another destination.
