Tadoussac offers a variety of ways to explore, from a historic wooden church and exhibitions about early encounters to trails along the fjord and viewpoints overlooking the water and landscape. When choosing a vacation rental in Tadoussac, you can first consider whether culture, shorter walks or multi-day hikes will shape your stay.

Wooden church and history

The Chapelle de Tadoussac was designated a National Historic Site for historical and architectural reasons. Its construction features and techniques make it the oldest wooden church in Québec and Canada, and an outstanding example of the mission churches inherited from New France. A museum tour presents the history of the missions, accompanied by a team of interpretation guides.

The Poste de traite Chauvin also explores the history of the area. Its interactive, engaging exhibition covers the first encounters between Europeans and First Nations, as well as the fur trade. The Tadoussac historic walking tour also introduces visitors to the first encounters between Indigenous peoples and European explorers. Ferme Hovington reveals another side of local history: it is the last surviving evidence of Tadoussac’s first agricultural settlements and the colonization of the Moulin-Baude sector.

Trails between village, forest and water

Several different routes are available for a shorter walk. The easy, 900-metre Sentier de la Pointe-de-l’Islet is a good spot for observing minke whales, belugas and seabirds. Information panels along the trail provide details about the area’s history and marine ecosystems. The Sentier de la Colline-de-l’Anse-à-l’eau is an easy, 1.1-kilometre loop. It winds through the forest to the hill at Anse-à-l’Eau, where a 360-degree panorama takes in the Saguenay Fjord, the St. Lawrence Estuary and the village.

The Sentier de la plage is an easy, two-kilometre out-and-back trail to Pointe Rouge. At low tide, it follows a sandy stretch between the forest and the sea, passing seabirds along the way. For a longer hike, the challenging Sentier Le Fjord is an alternative: the trail runs 43 kilometres one way to Baie Sainte-Marguerite. The route is designed to take two to three days, with overnight stays in a shelter. It’s a different kind of hiking day from the short loops and worth considering when planning your trip.

Nearby, the Sentier de l’Estuaire is an easy, 800-metre out-and-back trail. Its access point is six kilometres from the village on Chemin du Moulin-à-Baude, beyond the parking lot at Maison des Dunes. At the end, a lookout offers panoramic views of the dunes and the St. Lawrence Estuary. The Tadoussac dunes themselves consist of two large marine sand terraces, uncovered after the last glacier melted about 10,000 years ago. From this viewpoint on the St. Lawrence River, you can observe seabirds, birds of prey and marine mammals.

The sea, nature and village life

Baie de Tadoussac is an important gateway to Parc marin du Saguenay–Saint-Laurent; it also has a marina and departures for marine excursions. For a closer look at the marine mammals of the St. Lawrence River, the Centre d’interprétation des mammifères marins provides information about whale species, their characteristics, way of life and behaviour. The collection includes, among other things, the 13-metre-long skeleton of a sperm whale. At Jardin de la Grève, the Centre offers free outdoor activities, including whale-song workshops, theatre activities and meetings with naturalists who share research findings and answer questions.

Still an operating farm, Ferme Hovington brings together local history and contemporary agriculture: four farmers supply fresh local food through innovative organic projects, including a small summer market for tourists. At the free Happening des arts, held at various locations around Tadoussac, visitors are invited to talk with artists about their working methods. The Festival de la chanson de Tadoussac offers a varied music program featuring established and emerging artists.

These different interests can help guide your choice of vacation rental: would you mainly like to explore history and culture, take shorter walks through the forest and landscape, or plan a multi-day hike?
