Mont-Royal combines a distinctive city history with parks offering amenities for a wide range of leisure interests. The city is designated a National Historic Site of Canada; at the same time, its parks offer activities ranging from soccer and swimming to tennis, skateboarding and pickleball. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you are most interested in the history of the place or would prefer to focus on outdoor activities.

City history and a distinctive design

In 2008, the Canadian federal government designated Mont-Royal a National Historic Site of Canada. An important part of this is the Model City of Mount Royal, which is also a National Historic Site of Canada and represents almost the entire city of Mont-Royal. The design of this Model City is by Frederick Gage Todd, who created its overall plan. This makes urban planning itself a starting point for a visit: anyone interested in the history of cities and how they came into being can also explore Mont-Royal from this perspective.

A variety of leisure activities in the parks

Danyluk Park brings several recreational amenities together: two soccer fields, a mini soccer field, a skatepark, an outdoor swimming pool and a splash pool. There is also an arena, a fitness trail and exercise equipment for all age groups. The skatepark offers opportunities for skateboarders of all skill levels. This range lets you take the different interests of your travel group into account when planning your days, without having to settle on just one sport. Soccer, skateboarding, swimming and exercise are clearly distinct options.

At Connaught Park, tennis, lawn bowling and croquet are the main options. The park has six tennis courts, a lawn bowling green and a croquet court. If you would like to combine your trip with tennis, the number of courts is a practical point of reference. Lawn bowling and croquet add two other sports, distinct from the ball games and water activities at Danyluk Park. The park amenities listed here can help you consider which activities are of particular interest for your trip.

Mohawk Park also brings together several sports facilities: a baseball/softball field, a beach volleyball court, twelve tennis courts and six pickleball courts. There are also water features and a tennis practice wall. If you want to make tennis a focus, the twelve courts and practice wall are useful points of reference. Baseball or softball, beach volleyball and pickleball offer other options for active days. The water features add a different element to the selection, without requiring you to choose a sport.

Dakin Park and Darling Park also add specific, distinct options to the range of parks: Dakin Park has water features, while Darling Park has two mini soccer fields. If water features or a smaller-scale version of soccer suit your travel group’s interests, you can include these parks as you explore the area. Danyluk offers several different facilities, while Dakin and Darling each focus on a single amenity.

Which side of Mont-Royal is right for your trip?

When choosing where to stay, you can first consider which of these two sides appeals to you more: the history of the Model City or the variety of park amenities. Within the parks, the specific sport can help guide you: tennis is available at Connaught and Mohawk, while soccer and mini soccer are available at Danyluk and Darling. Danyluk complements its soccer fields with swimming facilities, a skatepark and fitness options; Mohawk combines several field and racket sports with water features.
