Discover Schomberg
Accommodation in Schomberg
Schomberg invites you to explore a historic main street, community farming and local events. Main Street has historic character and is a popular destination for residents, tourists and cyclists. There is also a self-guided walking tour, the Schomberg Community Farm in the town centre and events on the street. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, one question can help you decide: Should your stay focus primarily on architecture and a walk, community activities around the farm or a specific event date? Schomberg offers a range of themes and different ways to discover the town.
Main Street: Walking Tour and Architectural History
The self-guided “Where the Past Is Present” tour takes you on foot along Main Street. It gives your exploration a clear focus on the street itself. Main Street is also home to specialty shops and restaurants. One notable building on the street is Schomberg Presbyterian Church at 313. The one-storey, rectangular, front-gabled building was constructed around 1895 of red brick; its vernacular style shows Gothic Revival influences. The church has historical and associative value, as well as design, physical and contextual value. So when exploring Schomberg, you can consider both the self-guided walk and a single building with several architectural features. The tour and the church offer different thematic ways to experience Main Street, without assuming that the church is a stop on the tour.
Community and Farming at the Farm
Schomberg Community Farm is located in downtown Schomberg on six acres of land owned by the Township. It offers people of all ages a place to come together, learn, grow, dig, plant and eat. Educational programs complement these activities. Sales of produce and flowers are also among the farm’s community offerings. Its barn is a symbol of the community’s shared agricultural heritage. This makes the farm a different focus from Main Street: community activities and learning take centre stage here, while the street draws attention to its historic character and architecture. When planning your vacation, you can choose between a culturally themed walk and time spent enjoying activities at the farm.
Festivals on Main Street
The Schomberg Agricultural Fair is held annually and draws thousands of people to four days of entertainment on Schomberg’s Main Street. Its multi-day format is a specific difference to consider when planning your schedule, compared with a single event date. Main Street Christmas takes place on the first Saturday in December on Main Street. The festival ends with the Farmers' Parade of Lights, which celebrates Schomberg’s agricultural roots and the surrounding community. The events therefore differ both in timeframe and occasion: after the four-day fair, another option is the December festival and its parade. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the respective event dates in advance.
On Foot or by Car
Another annual option is the Schomberg Horticultural Society’s garden tour. It is self-guided and takes place by car through Schomberg and the surrounding area. This differs significantly from the walking tour along Main Street: both are self-guided, but the means of getting around and the geographic scope are different. This is a helpful comparison when planning your trip and deciding whether to include a walk along a particular street or a drive through Schomberg and the surrounding area in your itinerary.
