A 40-metre-high waterfall—the second-highest in Ontario—shapes the landscape around Kakabeka Falls. It can be visited year-round; boardwalks and a pedestrian bridge offer views of the water from viewpoints on both sides of the falls. The Kaministiquia River also tells the story of the area's long natural history: it has cut deep into the rock and exposed 1.6-million-year-old fossils at the foot of the falls. In fall, bald eagles regularly gather in the gorge below the falls as salmon swim upstream to spawn.

Trails for Different Excursions

The shorter trails vary in length and route. The Mountain Portage Trail is an easy, 1.25-kilometre loop and is wheelchair accessible. It follows part of the historic portage that early travellers used to bypass the falls. The Boardwalk Trail is a straight 750-metre route; it is also easy and wheelchair accessible. Both trails offer a different option from the Little Falls Trail: this 2.5-kilometre loop is rated moderate to challenging, descends steeply into the river valley and passes Little Falls.

The River Terrace Trail is 3.5 kilometres long, moderately difficult and leads to two viewpoints overlooking the Kaministiquia River valley. The Beaver Meadows Trail is a 4.5-kilometre loop of moderate difficulty. Both trails are used mainly as groomed cross-country ski trails and are not maintained in summer. Check the latest park notices before visiting. Another option is the four-kilometre Poplar Point Trail: this loop is suitable for cycling, jogging and hiking, and is groomed for cross-country skiing in winter, depending on conditions and park operations. Wildlife and songbirds can be spotted along the trail; the aspen forest is especially colourful in fall. Sightings are not guaranteed.

Winter and Water in the Provincial Park

Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park has more than 15 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails for beginner and advanced skiers. In winter, the park also offers a 160-metre skating trail. It can be accessed from Luckens Road, with parking right beside it. Skating is possible only when conditions permit; check current conditions before setting out.

The small beach is upstream from the falls, along a sheltered stretch of the Kaministiquia River. It has a buoy-marked swimming area with a gradual slope. Currents and water levels can fluctuate, and strong currents are possible. Entering the river is prohibited when its flow exceeds 50 cubic metres per second. There are no lifeguards on duty at the beach. Pets are permitted on the grassy areas, but not on the sand or in the swimming areas. Check the latest notices on site before swimming.
