Picton’s streets invite you to stroll and make it easy to explore the town on foot. The downtown area has numerous shops, cafés and galleries. The Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area in Picton has more than seven kilometres of trails, including a walking trail. Its attractions also include Birdhouse City. The scenic, unpaved Whattam’s Memorial Walkway connects Macaulay Heritage Park with the Conservation Area and Birdhouse City. This lets you visit these places together on a walking tour, without implying anything about the condition of the route or the duration of the entire walk.

The free walking tour follows the Whattam’s Memorial Walkway and is available at any time; check current conditions before your visit. Birdhouse City is a miniature community with more than 100 nesting boxes for native birds. The outdoor attraction opened in 1980; the number of birdhouses may change.

The Millennium Trail offers a different scale: this 46-kilometre trail system runs countywide from Consecon to Picton and is not maintained. While the unpaved surface is a feature of the Whattam’s Memorial Walkway, the Millennium Trail comes with a notice that it is not maintained. Conditions on the trails in Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area may also vary seasonally.

Picton’s History and Culture

Macaulay Heritage Park lies on the southern edge of Picton. The historic former Church of St. Mary Magdalene is now used as a museum. The museum houses “A Path Forward,” a permanent exhibition about reconciliation work in the County that is continually being developed. It is co-curated with the Tsi Tyónnheht Onkwawén:na Language and Cultural Centre in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and supported by the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.

The park also includes the old St. Mary Magdalene Parish Cemetery and the Heritage Gardens. Macaulay House was built in 1830 and restored to its mid-1850s condition. The old Church of St. Mary Magdalene, also known as the English Church, was the first Anglican church in Prince Edward County. Reverend William Macaulay was part of the early history of the Parish of Hallowell: he organized it in 1823 and donated land for its church.

Built in 1918, the Regent Theatre is a historic landmark of Prince Edward County and a defining feature of Picton’s Main Street. Its program includes films, film festivals, concerts and theatrical performances. Events and dates change; check the dates if you are planning to attend a play or concert.

The Picton Nature Ewalk is an audio tour that lets you explore Picton’s nature near Main Street. A local ecologist accompanies you through the audio recordings. Picton Harbour Pontoon Boat Tours offers a different perspective on Prince Edward County: the 1.5-hour boat tour focuses on the County’s history, habitats and lesser-known sights, and is intended for visitors and locals. The experiences differ in focus and duration: the audio tour draws attention to nature near Main Street, while the boat tour lasts an hour and a half and covers topics related to the County.
