Middlesex County: Forests, Trails and History
Accommodation in Middlesex County
Explore Middlesex County through its nature, history and regional food culture. Highlights include the Middlesex County Forest, the trails of Joany's Woods, historical stories and seasonal maple syrup experiences. When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay.
Forest Areas and Trails
The Middlesex County Forest covers 1,025 hectares across 27 separate properties. The number of properties provides an overview of the County Forest's extent without presenting it as one continuous forest. There is also an important, clear rule for visitors: vehicles are prohibited in all forests owned by Middlesex County. This includes motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, cars and trucks.
Joany's Woods is near Sylvan in the Municipality of North Middlesex. The area is part of the Carolinian Canada region in the Ausable River Valley and is provincially recognized as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI). Its landscape includes hardwood swamps, mature upland and lowland forests, shrub areas and larger plantations. This brings together a variety of forest and wetland types rather than reducing the description to a single forest character.
Joany's Woods has two public trails: the Ivey Trail is 4.4 kilometres long, and the Inch Trail is 3.2 kilometres long. If choosing by trail length, you can compare the two figures directly: the Ivey Trail is 1.2 kilometres longer. Access to the southern end is via County Road 7 (Elginfield Road), and access to the northern end is via Boot Hill Road. There is also a nearby boat launch where canoes or kayaks can be put in the water.
For further orientation, the Middlesex County Trails Guide maps trails throughout the county. Symbols identify the activities available in each conservation area and park. When planning, you can therefore consider both the trails and the activities marked for each area.
History on the Trail and in the Museum
The Middlesex Heritage Trail shares stories on signs about struggles for sovereignty, pioneer settlements, the once-thriving oil industry, historic buildings and past events. Its themes range from settlement history and conflicts to the economic past and architectural heritage. Those interested in different aspects of regional history will find several perspectives along this heritage trail.
The Lucan Area Heritage & Donnelly Museum has a distinct focus: its exhibits cover the Donnellys, the Wilberforce Settlement and local history. Tours of the museum and historic buildings are also offered. The trail and museum differ in format: the Heritage Trail presents its themes through signs, while the museum combines exhibits and tours.
Maple Syrup and Regional Drinks
Seasonal experiences in Middlesex County include sugar bush tours. They combine tastings of artisan maple syrup varieties with local products and insights into the history of syrup production. This makes the tours a distinct way to explore a regional tradition, alongside nature and history.
The drinks scene also offers a variety of tasting experiences, including fresh farm-made cider, craft beer and small-batch spirits. If you want to include both culture and food and drink in your travel plans, these offerings provide another thematic focus. You can choose a vacation rental based on which of the experiences described are especially important to your plans, without trying to fit every activity into the same day.
The Right Base for Your Stay
For a nature-focused trip, the trails described and the Trails Guide maps can help you find your way; for a history-focused trip, consider the themes of the Heritage Trail and museum. If you want to include seasonal experiences and tastings, you can also take those interests into account when choosing a vacation rental. The key is deciding which priorities matter to you: forests and trails, history or regional products. Check the places you actually want to visit and choose your accommodation to fit your own travel plans.
