Bayfield: Beaches, Harbour and Heritage Trail

Bayfield in Ontario combines Lake Huron with a historic village centre and different ways to explore the area on foot or from the water. At the mouth of the Bayfield River is the Village of Bayfield Marina; the Heritage Trail also runs through tree-lined streets and past historic sites. When searching for a holiday rental or holiday home, it may therefore be important to consider whether you want to focus your stay primarily on the beach, village history, walks or the marina.

Beach days at two different locations

Bayfield Pier Beach offers a large sandy beach and the opportunity to swim in fresh water or walk along the pier. The beach has a lifeguard station, vehicle access, parking and public toilets. Access is different at Howard Street Beach: the sandy beach is at the end of Howard Street West in Bayfield and can be reached via stairs. There are no toilets there. If you are choosing between the two beaches, you can take these specific differences into account when planning your day. One offers a pier, swimming and the facilities mentioned above; at the other, you should consider the stair access and the lack of toilets.

The Heritage Trail: village streets and historic stops

The 2.5-kilometre Heritage Trail runs through Bayfield’s tree-lined streets, past historic buildings and to the village square, Clan Gregor Square. The walking route follows paved roads and is considered accessible. Eight historic information panels are located at points of interest along the route. This makes it possible to combine a walk around the village with short stops where you can learn more about each place.

The trail also passes through historic Pioneer Park, which overlooks Lake Huron. If you want to plan an additional detour, you can take the optional Mara Street Spur, which leads to the public pier and Bayfield Marina. This section is relatively steep and follows a gravel path. It is therefore quite different from the Heritage Trail described above, which follows paved roads, and offers a separate route option to consider when planning.

History and traces along the Bayfield River

Bayfield was founded in 1832 and has a historic Main Street. Historic traces can also be seen in the River Flats Natural Area, where the ruins of Thomson’s Mill and the old dam remain. The dam served as the first bridge over the Bayfield River. Those interested in the development of the village will therefore find a tangible connection to the river’s history, in addition to the buildings along Main Street.

Marina, boating and getting there

The Village of Bayfield Marina is located at the mouth of the Bayfield River where it meets Lake Huron, on the south shore. It offers fuel and transient mooring. Facilities also include picnic tables, a pump-out station, 20-, 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups, and toilets. A boat launch is located at the end of Fishermans Wharf Road. Bayfield can also be reached by boat via Harbour Lights Marina.

Bus service is also available: Bayfield is served by a Huron Shores Area Transit bus. These different travel and stay preferences may play a role in choosing your accommodation. If you want to experience Bayfield on foot, visit its beaches or explore its historic sites, the trail and village centre offer starting points. For a stay centred on the marina, the marina and boat launch are useful landmarks.
