Goulais River combines active outdoor experiences with a seasonal look at maple production. The Stokely Trails offer more than 100 km of expertly groomed ski trails and 25 km of designated snowshoe routes. There are also guided nature tours and backcountry camping trips from Forest The Canoe, as well as visits to the Sugar Shack during its opening period from March to April. When planning your trip, the main question is which of these different experiences you want to shape your stay.

Ski Trails and Snowshoe Routes

If you’re choosing a vacation rental with these outdoor and active offerings in mind, the Stokely Trails could be a good reason to include Goulais River in your search. The specific trail distances give you an idea of the scope of what’s available; on their own, they don’t indicate how long an individual visit might last or how challenging it might be. So, to start with, your decision depends on whether you prefer the designated ski trails or the snowshoe routes.

Guided Nature Tours and Camping Trips

Forest The Canoe offers guided nature tours from its location in Goulais River. If you’re interested in a guided experience, this is a different approach from independently choosing among the designated Stokely Trails. The nature tours are a suitable option to explore for travelers who want to focus on a guided outdoor experience.

Backcountry camping trips are also offered by Forest The Canoe. This activity provides another way to tailor your stay to your interests: as a camping trip, it differs from a guided nature tour and from the trail offerings. Forest The Canoe also offers seasonal outdoor adventures. This means that, in addition to the specifically named tours and camping trips, seasonal experiences are also part of what’s available; these activities should not be confused with one another.

Maple Season at the Sugar Shack

The Sugar Shack is open seasonally from March to April. During this time, its gift shop offers the full Hogan's Homestead product line as well as locally made products. Production can also be viewed from the shop. A visit therefore combines shopping with a look at the production process—a different focus from Goulais River’s outdoor activities.

The Maple Maker Adventure experience is also available. It accommodates up to six Maple Makers per Sugar Shack. This is a specific limit to keep in mind when planning the experience. The Sugar Shack’s seasonal opening period from March to April is also important if you want it to be part of your stay.

More places to discover: Blind River, Thessalon, Iron Bridge, Algoma Mills, Elliot Lake, Bruce Mines, Richards Landing and Michipicoten.
