Elliot Lake brings together striking views, nature, a distinctive townscape and mining history. At Fire Tower Lookout, the highest point in the immediate area, the observation platform offers a 180-degree panoramic view of the wilderness, residential areas, the main street and former mine sites that have since been restored to nature. The lookout is open seasonally. If you plan to visit this viewpoint, consider its seasonal opening when choosing your travel dates.

Trails and Protected Nature

Just a few minutes from the town centre, Elliot Lake’s trail network includes hundreds of kilometres of trails. The Horne Lake Heritage Trail and the 6 km Island Boardwalk Trail run alongside Miners' Memorial Park. Their different names and lengths give you specific points of reference when planning trails into your day. At Sheriff Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, habitat protection is the focus: the area is a protected habitat for birds, mammals and reptiles.

Further afield, north of Elliot Lake, Mississagi Provincial Park offers other options, including hiking, backcountry camping, canoeing and fishing. The range extends from trails near the town centre to nature and outdoor activities in the northern surroundings. Which of these options best suits your trip may also influence where you look for a vacation rental and how you plan your outings.

Water Activities and Winter Offerings

At Spruce Beach, you can swim in Elliot Lake and enjoy a large sandy area for sunbathing. If you’re planning a stay by the water with a boat, you can also consider Elliot Lake Boat Launch, where 18 slips are available for seasonal or short-term rental. Swimming and sunbathing offer a different focus from using the slips; both options give visitors interested in the water different ways to enjoy their stay.

Winter activities also vary by interest. Mt. Dufour Ski Area is in the centre of Elliot Lake and offers alpine skiing and snowboarding on a range of courses and runs. Rentals of ski and snowboard equipment are available, as are ski and snowboard lessons led by certified instructors. If you prefer cross-country skiing, Bob Stirling Cross Country Ski and Biking Trail has classic-style ski loops ranging from 2 to 12 km. The Elliot Lake Snowbirds develop and maintain around 270 km of groomed snowmobile trails around the city and in the surrounding area. Downhill runs, classic ski trails and snowmobile trails offer distinctly different ways to spend the winter.

Art and Mining History

You can discover art in Elliot Lake on a tour or at annual events. The Public Art Walking Tour takes visitors to local art exhibits in Elliot Lake. Arts on the Trail is a self-guided art tour held annually on the last Saturday in September. Elliot Lake's Heritage Days is an annual festival held over the Canada Day long weekend. These dates may be useful when planning a seasonal trip if you’d like to combine your time in town with art or a festival.

The Elliot Lake Museum preserves the history of the Elliot Lake region. Topics include early Indigenous culture, trapping and the timber industry, as well as prospecting and mining. The museum does not currently have a permanently staffed exhibition space. Another way to experience mining history is the Elliot Lake Mining Museum, which offers tours of decommissioned mines. Regional history and guided visits to decommissioned mines thus offer distinct cultural points of interest.

Getting Around and Choosing a Vacation Rental

You can explore Elliot Lake and the surrounding region by car or motorcycle; public transportation options with Ontario Northland Bus Service are limited. So when looking for a vacation rental, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your stay: trails and nature, water, winter sports or culture. Also consider the role a car or motorcycle will play in your trip, and factor limited public transportation options into your plans. This lets you choose where to stay in Elliot Lake based on the kind of trip you have planned, without assuming that one particular location will suit every activity.
