Yarmouth County brings together Acadian history, nature experiences, and an unusual distinction: Acadian Skies & Mi’kmaq Lands was the first destination in North America to receive Starlight certification. There are also forest and water activities at Ellenwood Lake, along with historic sites in West Pubnico. When planning your trip, it’s worth organizing these different highlights around what you’d like to experience.

Forest, water, and seasonal trails

At Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park, a 1.5-kilometre hiking trail winds through traditional Acadian forest. The park also offers opportunities for swimming, boating, and fishing. You can choose between a walk through the forest and activities on the water.

The season also affects what you can do in the park. In the off-season, the park grounds and trail are suitable for walking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The buildings and summer facilities are closed then. If you’re planning your days around the park, keep this difference between seasonal water activities and off-season options in mind.

Acadian history in West Pubnico

Le Village Historique Acadien de la Nouvelle-Écosse in West Pubnico includes an old Acadian cemetery and five 19th-century buildings. The visitor reception centre features interpretive exhibits on Acadian history and culture in Nova Scotia and other areas. A gift shop sells items made by local artisans. Before your visit, you can check the current visitor offerings.

The historic buildings and cemetery give the site a tangible connection to history; the exhibits add a broader perspective on Acadian culture. If you’d like to combine nature experiences and culture on your trip, West Pubnico offers a different focus from Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park.

More perspectives on Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia as a broader travel destination also encompasses distinctive cultural and landscape themes. Kejimkujik is a cultural landscape of the Mi’kmaq, who have used it for millennia. Visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and safety equipment there. The Grand-Pré National Historic Site shares Acadian stories through multimedia presentations, exhibits, a Victorian garden, and a memorial church. It is also the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Landscape of Grand-Pré. These examples broaden the view of Nova Scotia; they are not among the places in Yarmouth County described here.

Choose a vacation rental based on your planned experiences

Your planned itinerary can be a helpful starting point when choosing a vacation rental in Yarmouth County. If you’re centring your plans on activities at Ellenwood Lake Provincial Park, keep the seasonal differences in mind, as well as the closure of buildings and summer facilities during the off-season. If you’re especially interested in Acadian history, include West Pubnico, with its historic buildings and visitor reception centre, in your plans. Compare each accommodation’s location with the places you’d like to visit rather than assuming distances or features that haven’t been confirmed.

Chebogue Meadows is an interpretive educational trail in Yarmouth County; Port Maitland Beach is also in the county. These named places add to the options for getting your bearings, without having the same focus as the park or historic village.
