Grand Beach is a coastal community whose character is shaped by a large barachois pond, a long beach and Fortune Bay. It also has historical connections that tell of coastal surveying, lobster processing and fishing. If you are looking for a destination whose appeal comes from its landscape and past, Grand Beach offers a clear thematic focus when choosing a vacation rental for your trip.

Pond, Beach and Fortune Bay

Grand Beach is an unincorporated community on the west side of a large barachois pond. A one-mile-long beach separates the pond from Fortune Bay. The beach’s position between the pond and the bay makes the landscape especially vivid. When planning your trip, this coastal formation can be a starting point if you want to focus on waterscapes and the sequence of pond, beach and bay.

Nearby is Grand Beach Barachois, about 15 miles northeast of the town of Grand Bank. At several thousand acres, it is the largest of the two barachois under consideration. This brings out different scales: the specific separation of pond and bay at the community and the larger area of a barachois in the surrounding area.

Coastal Trails and Nature Watching

Hiking trails in the Frenchman's Cove area lead to the nearby communities of Garnish and Grand Beach. They pass along beaches from which you can watch the light over Fortune Bay. For your trip planning, this brings together movement and a landscape feature: the trail route and the view of the bay go hand in hand here. This offers a different perspective on the coast from the beach that separates the pond from the bay.

Birdwatching adds another distinct focus. Earlier observers recorded a greater variety of birds using a spotting scope from the “Gut” end in the community. This adds bird diversity and a closer way of observing to the landscape theme.

Traces of Local History

In 1765, Captain Cook stopped in Grand Beach on his way to Garnish while surveying the coast of Fortune Bay. In 1891, Grand Beach operated a lobster factory that employed five men and seven women; production amounted to 1,179 cases. In 1898, Grand Beach was a small fishing settlement in the Burin District. By 1921 at the latest, a Methodist church stood in the community. These different dates bring together distinct aspects: surveying the bay, lobster processing, the settlement’s fishing character and a religious institution.

Choosing Grand Beach as a Vacation Destination

When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to consider what interests you: would you like to focus on the community’s coastal landscape, are you mainly interested in the trails around Frenchman's Cove, or would you like to include Grand Beach’s history? If your travel companions have different preferences, you can discuss the beach, birdwatching, hiking trails and history as separate areas of interest.
