Powell River: Townsite, Coast and Trails
Accommodation in Powell River
Powell River is located on the shore of the Strait of Georgia in the center of the Malaspina Peninsula. The city combines a distinctive historic district with waterfront trails, nature viewing, and recreational activities. This gives you a varied range of options when planning your trip: you can focus your stay on architecture and local history, outdoor activities, or the maritime setting.
Local History in the Historic Townsite
Powell River’s Historic Townsite was recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1995. It is considered a well-preserved example of a planned single-industry community. The Townsite includes approximately 400 homes; 97 percent of them were built before 1940 and remain largely in their original condition, following the original Townsite plan of 1910–1911. The preserved buildings and planned layout give the district a tangible historic character. Historic walking tours are offered there during the summer months. Check availability before your trip.
Coast, Views, and Trails
Willingdon Beach Park is on the waterfront and offers beach access, a water playground, and a walking trail. Logger Sports Memorial Bowl is also located in the park. It was established in 2016 to revive and showcase logger sports in Powell River. This brings together the coastal setting and a place dedicated to a distinctive part of local sports history in one green space.
At Spirit Square, a viewpoint on a pier beside the BC Ferries terminal offers views across the Salish Sea. There are also opportunities to observe local marine wildlife. For a different focus, the trail network on Penticton Street has almost 30 kilometers of hiking and cycling trails; locally, it is known as the Maze. Millennium Park lies between the Powell River Recreation Complex and Willingdon Beach. Its hiking, cycling, and walking trails cover all skill levels. Large trees and meandering streams define the natural landscape.
Activities and Recreation
Those interested in cycling and skate sports will find a dedicated mix of facilities at Powell River Bike & Skate Park: the one-hectare park has progressive jumps and ramps for cycling skills, as well as a concrete pump track. Right next to it, the Skate Plaza includes, among other features, a halfpipe and a rail setup. These specialized facilities differ from the extensive trail network and make it easier to choose the focus of your activities.
The Powell River Recreation Complex is also home to the Aquatic Centre. Facilities include a 25-meter main pool with six lanes, a shallow leisure pool, and a large hot tub. The Evergreen Theatre in the Recreation Complex is a multipurpose venue with various seating and performance configurations. qathet Museum & Archives offers virtual exhibitions on the history of the qathet region, including the history of mountaineering. The options thus range from trails and sports facilities to events and history.
Getting Here and Choosing a Vacation Base

Powell River Airport (YPW) is centrally located within the city limits. When traveling by BC Ferries, one route connects the Little River terminal in Comox on Vancouver Island directly to Powell River. Another connects Earl’s Cove with Saltery Bay, south of Powell River’s city limits. Check ferry schedules before your trip.
When looking for a vacation rental in Powell River, your preferred vacation theme can be a useful starting point: historic architecture and summer walking tours, activities on trails and in parks, or the coastal setting with views and marine wildlife.
