Terrace sits on a series of natural, flat terraces in the broad Skeena River valley. This landform gives the city its distinctive setting. When choosing a holiday rental, consider whether you mainly want to experience downtown and local history, or are planning an active stay with trails and outdoor activities. Terrace is also a highway junction: the Trans-Canada Highway 16, also known as the Yellowhead Highway, Highway 37 and the Nisga'a Highway meet here. The VIA Rail main line between Edmonton and Prince Rupert serves passenger traffic only; Terrace's VIA Rail station is located in the George Little House. For a specific train journey, check services and schedules for your travel dates.

Downtown, Heritage and Local Stories

At the heart of downtown is George Little Park, a gathering place for concerts and picnics. Its amenities include a Spirit Square, an outdoor stage, a fitness park and a playground area. This brings events, exercise and play together as different ways to enjoy the park. If a particular facility is important for your visit, check its current status in advance.

Also downtown is the George Little House, which the City of Terrace designated a heritage site in 1982. It is also home to the VIA Rail station. The Heritage Park Museum features exhibits on the local settlement history of Terrace and the surrounding area, and offers guided tours of the museum. If you plan to take a tour, check the dates for your visit. Another heritage site is the Kitsumgallum “Pioneer Cemetery,” a historic cemetery and an important part of Terrace's heritage.

The connections to Indigenous history are also part of understanding the area: Terrace acknowledges that the community is located on the unceded territory of the Tsimshian and maintains close relationships with the Kitselas and Kitsumkalum First Nations. Together with the settlement-history exhibits, this offers another way to understand the city's past and present.

Hiking Trails, Cycling and Winter Activities

Terrace has well-maintained hiking and cycling trails. On Terrace Mountain, visitors can hike to the Terrace Wolfpack art installation; check trail conditions before setting out. The Bike Skills Park offers a different focus: its five acres feature trails and facilities for practicing cycling skills. The two activities therefore have distinct aims—hiking to an art installation on the one hand, and practicing on a bike on the other.

Fishing on the Skeena River is another option, available year-round and suitable for families. In winter, downhill, cross-country and backcountry skiing are also on offer. These different types of skiing can help guide you when planning a winter stay. A golf course at the foot of an imposing mountain rounds out the recreational offerings.

Events and a Trip to the Surrounding Area

Terrace hosts its annual Riverboat Days festivities over the long BC Day weekend. Check the specific dates for your travel year. Terrace is also home to the largest farmers' market in northern British Columbia; if you'd like to visit, check the event dates separately.

Near Terrace, Ferry Island Campground is surrounded by a 150-acre park with trails, a children's playground and unique tree sculptures. Ferry Island is open year-round to walkers and river watchers. Its trails, playground and tree sculptures make for a different kind of outing than Terrace's downtown sites. If you're traveling with children, you can also include the playground area at George Little Park and family-friendly fishing on the Skeena River in your day plans.

When searching for a holiday rental, you can use this mix as a guide: would you prefer to focus your stay on downtown and its heritage, or are hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities your priority? Riverboat Days, the farmers' market and Ferry Island may also shape your plans. Choosing accommodation based on the experiences that matter most to you can help you compare locations suited to your own travel plans.
