Stuie lies near the confluence of the Atnarko River and the Bella Coola River. The rivers give the place a distinctive landscape and are also connected to its history. Stuie is located in the traditional territories of the Nuxalk Nation. Those interested in the area will therefore encounter not only a river landscape, but also a long history of travel and living together.

River Routes and Local History

In the past, Nuxalkmc travelled upriver to Stuie in laden canoes to trade and gather berries. Along the way, they rested and visited families in various villages. Trade, food, and family connections were thus part of a journey that followed the rivers. This historical connection gives the waterfront setting a cultural dimension that extends beyond the landscape.

Another local historical landmark is the Stuie Lodge, which Walker built on his land in 1931. The specific year and the connection to Walker’s land make the lodge a tangible part of local history. Together with the accounts of river journeys, it paints a picture of Stuie in which places and routes play an important role.

Waterfalls, Hiking Trail, and Canoe Trip

Nearby, Hunlen Falls plunges 260 metres before flowing into the Atnarko River. Here, waterfall and river are directly connected: the Atnarko River is not only part of the landscape around Stuie, but also the river into which the falls flow. Belarko Wildlife Viewing Area offers a different way to experience the region. It is jointly managed by BC Parks and the Nuxalk Nation, is located on Highway 20, borders the Belarko Boat Launch, and is three kilometres past Fishers Pool Campground.

If you would like to include a hike in your plans, the Kettle Pond Trail is a few kilometres past Stuie. This easy, two-kilometre trail descends to a unique glacial depression called Kettle Pond. The destination is therefore more than just another stretch of trail; it is a distinctive landform. Fishing is also possible in Tweedsmuir Park.

For more time on the water, consider the Turner Lake Canoe Circuit in the surrounding area. The canoe trip takes three to five days and passes through impressive mountain scenery. The chain of lakes includes approximately 18 kilometres of lakes, as well as 2.5 kilometres of rivers and creeks. These details offer two different ways to plan: the Kettle Pond Trail has a specified distance, while the circuit is described by its duration of several days. This lets you weigh whether a shorter hike or a multi-day canoe trip better suits your travel plans, without treating the two activities as equivalent.

Stuie as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip

When choosing a vacation rental, it can help to first decide what you would like to focus on: river landscapes and local history, a hike to Kettle Pond, or several days in a canoe. These interests call for different plans and timeframes. If you are travelling with family, you can organize outings around everyone’s interests and the time available, rather than fitting every destination into the same day’s itinerary.

There are accommodations in the wider area encompassing Stuie and Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, but no gas station or other services. Since services can change, check the latest information before your trip. This is important when planning your stay; it applies to the wider area, not just Stuie. That way, you can consider your choice of accommodation alongside your planned outings and practical travel preparations.
