Discover Milk River
Accommodation in Milk River
Milk River brings together local history and canoeing: the Centennial Cairn and local museum offer historical highlights, while the Milk River is rated for canoeing from beginner to intermediate level. Sports and community facilities are also among the activities described. In the wider region, Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park is known for its Indigenous rock art. When planning your trip, you can weigh up local history, activities and a regional excursion destination.
Local History and Regional Culture
Construction of the Milk River Centennial Cairn began in early 1966, with suitable stones collected from the surrounding area. In 2012, the cairn was featured as one of Alberta’s symbols in the “Passport to Alberta’s Community Icons” program. These two dates mark different milestones: construction began with the collection of materials, and the cairn was later featured as a symbol in the program.
The Milk River Historical Society & Museum preserves artifacts, documents, maps and records with a historical connection to Milk River and the surrounding area. Its collection therefore includes different types of historical material—from objects and written documents to maps. The Milk River Historical Society also promotes interest in exploring the geographical, recreational and cultural features of Milk River and the surrounding areas.
Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, in the wider region around Milk River, offers a different focus. Visitors can see one of the most extensive collections of Indigenous pictographs and petroglyphs in North America there. Those interested in this rock art can plan it as a distinct regional highlight alongside local history.
Water, Golf and Sports
The Milk River is rated for canoeing from beginner to intermediate level. Riverside Golf Course sits on the banks of the Milk River and is a publicly operated 9-hole course. It also has a four-lane bowling alley for five-pin bowling. Canoeing, golf and bowling therefore offer different activity options.
The Milk River Curling Rink has three curling sheets. Upstairs are a lounge and a spectator area. The Milk River Civic Centre also brings together a range of spaces, including a large gymnasium, a stage, a kitchen and a bar, as well as rooms for karate and other activities. The Milk River Skateboard Park is located on the grounds of Erle Rivers High School.
The recently upgraded play equipment at Kinsmen Park is considered safe and entertaining for young families. This adds a family-friendly option for those with younger children to the sports facilities. The different activities can be considered separately when planning: canoeing and golf are complemented by facilities for curling, bowling, skateboarding and other activities.
Getting There and Choosing Accommodation
