Crossing Rocks: Coast, Wetlands and Birdlife

Crossing Rocks is a small coastal village on Great Abaco in the Out Island Bahamas. A broad, crescent-shaped bay defines the coastline; two offshore rock formations also lie near the settlement. A narrow passage runs between them, probably giving the place its name. The coastline, bay and passage give Crossing Rocks a distinctive landscape setting.

Coast and Local History

The settlement has gradually moved inland over time. Storms and the conditions along an exposed coast shaped this development. An ethnographic account from 1964 notes that Crossing Rocks was isolated from other settlements on Abaco by the lack of roads and rough waters. The history of the settlement thus brings together a seascape shaped by the ocean and the movement of the community inland.

Wetlands, Birds and Beach

In the wetland area, bodies of water, mangroves and other wetland plants lie on both sides of the highway. A brackish pond area is located across the highway from the bonefishing dock. The coast, brackish water and mangroves give the landscape distinct facets.

The brackish pond area is considered a good place to observe herons, heron-like birds and yellowlegs. A reddish egret was also spotted there during an observation in 2015. For nature enthusiasts, Crossing Rocks thus pairs a specific birdwatching interest with the wetlands’ bodies of water and vegetation.

Beach walks also offer a different perspective on the coast. Walkers have searched for shells, sea glass smoothed by the surf and old snail shells bleached by sun and salt. This draws attention to the small shapes and colors along the shore beside the crescent-shaped bay.

Environment and Community Experiences

FRIENDS holds an annual environmental summer camp in Crossing Rocks. Bahamian students learn about Abaco’s environment and spend time outdoors; the program is intended for this audience. Specific dates and participation requirements may change. At National Parks Day 2023, wildlife walks were on the program at Abaco Crossing Rocks Beach. Together, these examples show a recurring environmental camp and a specific program activity from 2023.

South Abaco as a Regional Natural Setting

The wider destination of South Abaco adds other conservation themes that broaden the perspective beyond the coastal village. The South Abaco Blue Holes Conservation Area was established in 2015. Within its 20,500-acre area, Abaco National Park protects extensive Caribbean pine and coppice forests, home to numerous native and endemic wildlife species. The park also protects the northern breeding grounds of the Bahama parrot. Every spring, thousands of Bahama parrots come to the national park for the breeding season.

The history of protected areas is also part of this regional overview: Cross Harbour Protected Area was designated in 2015 and expanded in 2021 to include significantly larger marine areas. The forests, parrot breeding grounds and protected areas thus complement Crossing Rocks’ coastal and wetland impressions with a broader perspective on South Abaco.
