Koumac: Karst, Coastal Trails and Culture

Koumac combines village life with impressive natural and cultural experiences: hiking trails lead to limestone formations, caves are nearby, and Pandop offers coastal views. There are also opportunities to learn about the village’s history and enjoy activities on the water or in the air. Culture and History in Koumac

Koumac’s church was built in 1950 using a crescent-shaped structure acquired from the GIs after the Second World War. Inside are stained-glass windows and numerous sculptures by C. Weiss. If you’re interested in architecture and religious art, you can include this site in your exploration of the village.

The former mining village of Tiébaghi is a historic site. A guided tour introduces its history and remains with an experienced guide. Another historic trace leads to Forêt de la Vierge. The forest is home to a statue of the Virgin Mary, erected in 1921 by a family from Koumac. The site is about 8 km from the village.

Choose a Hike to Suit the Distance and Difficulty

For a shorter hike, consider Pandop’s marked coastal trail: it is 400 m long, rated easy and has an estimated walking time of about 30 minutes. There are viewpoints along the way. The Sentier Roches de Notre-Dame is also described as an easy trail, measuring 1.1 km with a walking time of 45 minutes; it is about 15 km from the village. From there, you can see more of the area’s limestone massifs and Pain de sucre.

For a longer outing, consider the Thiuvado hiking trail in the heights of Karembé. It is about 5 minutes from the village and is a moderately difficult 4.8 km round trip; the stated walking time is 2 hours and 30 minutes. The Haute Néhoué hikes are about 15 km from the village, on the road to Ouégoa near Gîte Chez Alcide et Nicole. They pass through densely vegetated landscapes and karst formations and follow the Néhoué River; you can hike independently or with a guide. Caves, Reef and Unique Perspectives

Petite Grotte des vents is one of the Grottes de Koumac. It is free and open to the public; allow 15 to 20 minutes for the easy visit. Grande Grotte is also free and open to the public. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the walk there; its galleries extend for 380 m, and access is rated easy to moderately difficult. There is a camping area nearby with tables and a restroom block.

At Pandop Marina, Eden Blue Caledonia offers introductory scuba and freediving courses, snorkelling on the coral reef, visits to various dive sites and training for all levels. Îlot Kendec, in the pass of the same name off the coast of Koumac, can be visited or viewed from shore. For an aerial view, NORD ULM offers scenic flights from Koumac airfield over the village, mines, coral reef, islets and New Caledonia’s lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Weigh Up Excursions and Your Base

The viewpoint in the upper part of the village on Rue Gaston Clause offers panoramic views across the entire village; tables and benches are available there. The upper part of the village is also home to the La Crinière Club Hippique riding club, which offers riding lessons, introductory courses, equestrian games and rides on a rural estate. Vertikalédonie offers outdoor climbing at Les Roches Notre Dame, Les Grottes de Koumac and Chez Alcide et Nicole—for children and adults, beginners and advanced climbers, and individuals, families or friends.

The journey is also a factor when choosing a base: from Nouméa, the route to Koumac follows the RT1 territorial road and takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes.
