Mocuba lies at the confluence of the Licungo and Lugela rivers, about 150 kilometres northwest of Quelimane, the provincial capital of Zambezia Province. Its riverside setting shapes the town’s landscape. At the same time, it is worth distinguishing Mocuba as a destination in its own right from other places in the province: the river landscape is part of Mocuba’s character, while other cultural and natural attractions belong to the wider regional context.

Riverbanks and municipal markets

Along the banks of the Licungo and Lugela are scenic areas considered particularly appealing for tourist activities, especially in Carreira de Tiro and Naverua. If you are especially interested in landscapes, these riverbanks offer a specific point of reference for exploring Mocuba as a destination. The two rivers provide a shared geographical point of reference for the town and its surroundings.

Municipal markets also offer a glimpse of Mocuba, though the timeframe is specific: in August 2019, the municipality had eight markets, according to municipal data—two formal and six informal. A municipal report based on data collected in 2019 describes fairs in Mocuba as rare; when planned, they were organised an average of three to four times a year. According to the report, the fairs were a joint district-level programme and usually took place at temporary venues such as the town garden. They mainly offered agricultural produce and brought together traders from Mocuba District and neighbouring districts.

Other travel interests in Zambezia Province

In Quelimane, the provincial capital, the Catedral Velha is a historic landmark. It was declared a National Monument by decree on 3 August 1943; its history is closely linked to the history of Zambezia Province and, in particular, Quelimane. For travellers interested in regional history as well as landscapes, it is a distinct cultural point of interest within the province.

Another destination is Gilé National Park in Zambezia Province. Visitors can hike through varied landscapes and go on safari. The park’s landscapes include miombo woodlands, dambos, wooded savannas and riverside vegetation along several rivers and streams. Visitors can also observe a wide variety of bird species there. The park is home to 95 mammal species and 114 bird species.

A four-wheel-drive vehicle (4×4) is recommended for travelling to Gilé National Park; road conditions can vary. Cultural traditions are also part of the wider picture of the province: Enowa N’niketxe, also known as the snake dance, is an artistic tradition passed down through generations.

When choosing where to search, it helps to distinguish between these different points of interest: Mocuba combines its riverside setting with municipal market data from August 2019; Quelimane is associated here with the Catedral Velha, while Gilé offers hiking, safaris and birdwatching. If Mocuba is your main destination, you can focus your search on a holiday rental in the city. If the national park is your main interest, take its 4×4 recommendation and variable road conditions into account when planning your trip.
