The Koulikoro Region combines traditional architectural forms with open landscapes and a history stretching from Manden to the Mali Empire. In Kangaba stands the circular Kamabulon, with its conical thatched roof. Between Keniélen and Kangaba lies the grass-covered rise of Kurukan Fuga; near Siby, a granite massif forms the Arche de Kamandjan. Together, these places offer different ways to experience cultural heritage and landscape.

Kamabulon and the History of Manden

Kamabulon, the sacred house of Kangaba, was built in 1653. The circular building is made of mud bricks and has a conical thatched roof. The roof is renewed every seven years, a practice inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Its architectural form and recurring maintenance practice are directly connected. For those interested in culture, this combination of mud-brick construction and roof renewal offers a vivid insight into local tradition.

Kurukan Fuga is a 32-hectare area characterized by open grassland, between the village of Keniélen and the town of Kangaba. After his victory over Soumangourou Kanté, king of Sosso, Emperor Soundiata Kéita gathered the rulers of Manden there. Together, they discussed and approved the Charter of the new Manden. Unlike Kamabulon, the focus here is an open rise and the political event associated with it.

Granite Landscape and Cultural Heritage near Siby

The Arche de Kamandjan is a cultural and natural landscape above a granite massif that served as a natural protective wall for the village of Siby. It is regarded as a historic work and an important testament to the formation and development of the Mali Empire in the 13th century. In addition to the arch itself, the site includes the Lion’s Grotto, the place of prophecy, the sacrificial grotto, rock overhangs and the site of Telikourou. Here, the focus is not just on a single structure, but also on the granite landscape and its historical associations. This is a different emphasis from the architecture of Kamabulon or the open grassland of Kurukan Fuga.
