Omadhoo: House Reef, Tropical Greenery and Island Life
Accommodation in Omadhoo
Omadhoo is located in the center of Southern Ari, which locals call Alif Dhaal, about 65 kilometers from Malé International Airport. More than half of the island is covered in tropical vegetation, including breadfruit trees and coconut palms. Numerous Bengal fig trees and tropical palms also grow on the western side. Alongside this island greenery, the reef surrounding Omadhoo shapes the character of the destination.
Reef, Beach and Island Nature
The local reef is home to marine life including dolphins, manta rays and sharks. When snorkeling at the house reef, you can reach coral gardens with reef fish and nurse sharks from the beach. This offers a way to distinguish between the wider marine life around Omadhoo and the specific snorkeling experience from the beach. You can relax at the bikini beach for visitors, which complements the reef experiences with a quieter focus by the water.
Snorkeling and Diving
Omadhoo Dive Tours is a PADI 5-Star Instructor Development Center in Omadhoo and offers personalized diving and snorkeling courses. The training ranges from Open Water Diver to PADI PRO training. There are also daily snorkeling trips, some of which take place in the morning, afternoon and at night. First-time divers can take an introductory diving course with a PADI professional over the course of a morning at Omadhoo Dive Tours. A refresher dive is for people who have not dived for a long time or who were newly certified with little experience.
Daily diving trips take place in Omadhoo’s dive area. There are no more than four divers per dive guide, and groups have a maximum of ten divers. Daily dive programs also include programs to protect local marine ecosystems, as well as a detailed safety and marine biology briefing. The meeting point for daily dive programs is Omadhoo harbor.
Trips to the wider area are also available: snorkeling trips with whale sharks in South Ari Atoll are offered from Omadhoo; whale sharks are sighted in these waters year-round. Confirm availability before your trip. Trips to nearby cleaning stations and reefs with manta rays and sea turtles are also offered, although conditions vary seasonally. Other activities include kayaking in a lagoon and dolphin-watching trips at dusk, when spinner dolphins are sought out.
Cultural Experiences and Local Cuisine
“Maldivian Night” is offered as a cultural experience on Omadhoo. Omadhoo Dive Tours also offers local craft workshops where visitors can learn about the Maldives’ traditional knowledge and skills. Tastings of traditional dishes also provide insights into the archipelago’s culinary traditions. Night fishing and sunset fishing with a traditional Maldivian handline offer a different perspective on island life; the catch can then be grilled. Visitors can also watch fishermen bring their daily catch ashore.
Getting There and Choosing a Location
A scheduled speedboat connects Omadhoo with Malé and Velana International Airport; the journey takes about an hour and a half. As departure times may change, it is advisable to check the schedule before your trip. Everything on Omadhoo is within a short walking distance. Your plans for the day can vary considerably depending on your interests, from snorkeling at the house reef to guided tours, crafts, cuisine and fishing.
