Helengili – House Reef, Marine Life and Island Experiences
Accommodation in Helengili
Helengili combines a lush green island with a turquoise lagoon teeming with marine life. On the northeastern edge of Malé Atoll, the island borders a sea channel on one side and lies at the entrance to an important channel. The house reef is a defining feature: just a few metres from the beach, it makes the underwater world a central part of any stay.
House Reef and Diving
You can dive or snorkel at the house reef. Animals found there include sea turtles, lobsters and blacktip reef sharks. Currents also play a role, bringing reef sharks, sea turtles and eagle rays to the edge of the island. On almost every dive, divers can swim alongside these animals. This is a tangible difference when planning a trip between a stay focused on the underwater world and an island holiday with other priorities.
TGI Diving Helengeli is a PADI 5-Star Dive Centre in North Malé Atoll. It offers diving experiences exclusively to guests of OBLU by Atmosphere at Helengeli. If diving is an important reason for your trip, this restriction is a factor when choosing the right stay. Guided snorkelling excursions offer another way to discover the diverse marine life of Malé Atoll.
Activities on and in the Water
The island plan includes a complimentary traditional handline fishing trip for every guest and every stay, from 08:00 to 09:30. It also includes a complimentary sunset trip on a local dhoni for every guest and every stay, from 17:15 to 18:30. The different times of day give these two offerings their own character: the fishing trip takes place in the morning, and the dhoni trip in the evening.
If you prefer to head out on the water under your own steam, you can use non-motorised equipment such as stand-up paddleboards and kayaks free of charge. Glass-bottom kayaks are excluded. So, alongside diving and guided snorkelling excursions, you can choose activities using your own equipment. Which suits your trip depends on whether you want to explore the underwater world with a guide or head out on a non-motorised board or in a kayak.
Island Life and Activities for Young Guests
Every Friday, guests can enjoy a traditional Boduberu performance featuring Maldivian music, dance and drumming. It adds a cultural dimension to the stay, distinct from activities on the reef and water. Young guests can also visit the Kids Nature Centre, an interactive learning area where they can discover nature above and below the water.
There are also ways to stay active on land: the Overwater Gym offers complimentary access as well as weekly and seasonal group activities such as yoga and aerobics. The options range from exploring the house reef to shared island activities and group sessions. For families, the Nature Centre can be a dedicated point of interest, while Boduberu and water activities offer other experiences to enjoy together.
Getting There and Choosing a Destination
You can reach Helengili from Malé International Airport by speedboat in 50 minutes. The island plan includes complimentary speedboat airport transfers on arrival and departure. These details help you plan your journey and also explain that the island is accessible via a specific speedboat connection to the airport.
Boduberu, the Nature Centre and group activities add culture, nature discovery and exercise to the picture. This can help you match the destination to your preferred holiday focus without treating its different experiences as interchangeable.
