Khammuan: caves and protected landscapes
The wider travel region of Khammuan is home to natural and cultural destinations with a variety of highlights. They offer a regional perspective on caves, karst landscapes and traditions, which you can consider separately from your choice of accommodation in Ban Namsanam when planning your trip.
Kong Lor Cave is located in Phu Hin Bun National Park, in Khoun Kham District in Khammouane Province. Its tunnel is 7.5 kilometres long and 100 metres high in some places. In Kong Lor, villagers operate boats that provide access to the cave. If you plan to take a boat in, check availability in advance.
Hin Nam No National Park was inscribed in 2025, together with Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, as a transboundary World Heritage natural site. Its landscape features include pristine rainforests, waterfalls and complex cave systems. Another karst landscape can be found in Boualapha District: Xe Bang Fai Cave lies in a lush protected area and limestone karst region. The large river cave was formed over millions of years by the Xe Bang Fai River as it flowed through the limestone mountains.
Caves with different features
Nang Aen Cave and Xiang Liap Cave offer different highlights: at Nang Aen, visitors can climb up and down stairs to view natural rock formations; Xiang Liap has a 30-metre-high entrance. Nang Aen is 18 kilometres northeast of Thakhek town on National Road 12. Xiang Liap is about 14 kilometres northeast of Thakhek District on Route 12, near Xiang Liap village. Check road conditions before setting out, as they may change.
Culture and activities in Khammuan
Tham Pa Fa Cave, also known as Buddha Cave, is an important cultural and religious landmark in Khammouane Province. The That Sikhottabong Festival is held annually in the third lunar month; the calendar dates vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.
Traditional crafts are also part of Khammuan’s cultural heritage: the Phou Tai people are associated with traditional handicrafts and are known for their meticulous weaving. For hiking enthusiasts, Tad Sieng Leu is considered a particularly important destination. This gives you a way to distinguish between different interests: caves and protected areas alongside cultural traditions and hiking opportunities.
