Shankol: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Shankol is the starting point of a mountain route that follows the Shankol River to the Tash-Machet Pass. From Osh, the village can be reached by vehicle as an access point to the Kichik-Alay mountain region.

Mountains and Trails

From the Tash-Machet Pass, the route continues through the Utor Valley to the Utor Pass and Shankol Peak. The trail to Shankol Peak follows its southeastern slope and is rated 2A. The ascent to the Tash-Machet Pass is described as involving trails through alpine meadows as well as a steep slope of grass and scree. Shankol Peak is described as an excellent viewpoint.

Nature

The Nookat District encompasses valleys and foothill areas with hot summers and moderately cool winters, as well as nival zones above 3,000 meters. In July, average temperatures in the valleys are 24.4 °C and 15.5 °C in the mountains.

The Shankol River is one of the most important watercourses in the Nookat District. Its sources lie in the Alai and Kichik-Alai mountain ranges and their foothills. In the valley, the river was described as easy to cross. Poplar groves and fruit trees are described along the Shankol River. As the elevation increases, juniper appears on open slopes, while snow-covered peaks in the upper valleys come into view. Apple orchards can be found at many houses in Shankol.

Transport

The Nookat District is connected by the Osh–Nookat–Kyzyl-Kiya, Nookat–Aravan, and Nookat–Papan roads.

Culture

A sacred site is described as a mazar in a niche beside the road on the approach to Shankol. The writer and professor Abdykerim Muratov recalled years spent in Shankol; his recollection connects the place with a local literary figure.
