Naryn: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Naryn lies in the broad valley of the Naryn River at an altitude of 2,040 metres. The river is described as suitable for rafting at all difficulty levels.

Culture

The cityscape combines Soviet-era apartment blocks and administrative buildings with bazaar lanes, teahouses and family-run shops. Textiles are among the goods offered at the central bazaar; seasonal produce and kurut, or dried yoghurt balls, are also available there. The bazaar is suitable for one to two hours of strolling.

At the entrance to Naryn, a Kyrgyz Shyrdak cultural tourism festival was planned at the As A Nomad Ethnocomplex. Demonstrations of crafts, national and equestrian games, food presentations and handicraft workshops were planned.

Naryn's regional library has a department for Manas studies and information. Its Manas collection is intended to help tourists and foreign guests learn about the epic.

Surroundings

The Naryn State Zoological Reserve is located near Naryn, outside the city. It protects wolves, snow leopards and Marco Polo sheep.

Regional excursions associated with Naryn include the Tash-Rabat caravanserai – a historical and architectural monument from the 15th century near Naryn that is connected with the Silk Road –, Salkyn Tor National Park and the “Teshik Geopark and Nature Area”. The associated regional range includes this Silk Road heritage, hiking, wildlife, geological formations and mountain landscapes.

Getting Around

Shared taxis and marshrutkas run regularly between Bishkek and Naryn. The same main east–west route connects Naryn with Kochkor.

The local CBT office can arrange drivers for onward travel from Naryn, organise permits for restricted-access zones and put travellers in contact with shepherd families.

Budget guesthouses and homestays are concentrated near the centre of Naryn. Other destinations in the same area include Chaek, Kok - Dzhar.
