Near Lake Teniz, there is a reed belt 30–100 metres wide. Lake Karakamys is located north of Lake Teniz; the two lakes are connected by a short canal. In the surrounding area, spring floods on the shallow western and northwestern shores of Lake Karakamys form marshy lagoons. Also nearby, the Teniz–Karakamys lake system includes freshwater lakes that may become brackish when water levels are low. Lakes Teniz and Karakamys are among the Internationally Important Bird Areas in the Qostanai region. Nearby, the Teniz–Karakamys wetland has been identified as an area with a high diversity of waterbirds and wetland birds during the breeding season and migration.

Lake Teniz is listed as a local fishing water body with an area of 6,420 hectares. Lake Karakamys is listed with areas of 204 and 1,161 hectares.

Culture and History

The Talapker kurgan is listed as an archaeological monument of the Early Iron Age, 12 kilometres northeast of the village of Teniz. Near Borovskoye, the Holy Spring of Cosmas and Damian is located beside a lake in a pine forest; it has an enclosure, a cross and a small bridge. The grounds of the Ibray Altynsarin Mausoleum include lighting, footpaths, landscaping and areas for cultural and commemorative events. The site welcomes pilgrims, tourists, school groups and researchers.
