Catacamas combines a historic city center protected as a national monument with archaeological traces in the municipality and a diverse festival culture. The city’s history centers on the old layout and original architectural monuments, while the festivals highlight different cultural traditions. This makes it possible to discover Catacamas through several specific themes rather than limiting your stay to just one focus.

City history and archaeological traces

The Centro Histórico de Catacamas was declared a national monument by Executive Decree 239-2010. The city preserves elements of its characteristic old urban layout and original architectural monuments there. So it is not just the historic buildings that are of interest: the structure of the old center is also part of what defines Catacamas.

Another archaeological trace leads to Cueva del Río Talgua. The cave is located in Aldea Talgua, in the Municipality of Catacamas, seven kilometers northeast of the city. The tunnel in the ritual chamber consists of three superimposed passages; 23 deposits of human skeletal material were found there. The layered structure and the finds give the cave its own archaeological significance within the municipality.

The Municipality of Catacamas also includes Cerrito de La Felicidad, a natural landmark.

The Casa de la Cultura abogado Hostilio Lobo Cálix is part of the city’s cultural life. In July 2024, its walls displayed murals by local and national artists: portraits of national writers and scenes depicting local flora and fauna. At that time, a museum was also being established there, using items recovered from the city that had previously been lost or hidden. The murals bring together literature and art with motifs from the local natural environment.

Festivals with different highlights

The Fericat program included equestrian parades, floats, craft fairs, and traditional games. Religious processions carrying the patron saint, San Francisco de Asís, passed through the streets of Catacamas. There was also an air show featuring parachutists and a light show. The program thus ranged from parades and processions to games and performances.

The Festival del Vino de Coyol offers a different focus. At the festival in Catacamas, traditional wine made from fermented coyol palm sap was produced and sampled. Tastings straight from the trunk or from bottles were accompanied by folk music and craft fairs. Unlike the wide-ranging mix at Fericat, the focus here is on a specific drink and the activities that accompanied its tasting.

Documented topics in Catacamas also include building upgrades. The Polideportivo Ramón Díaz López received seven paved courts, and its observation tower complex was repaired. In addition, the multipurpose hall was remodeled and fitted with covered seating for larger events. The work therefore covered the courts, observation tower, and event area.

When looking for a holiday rental in Catacamas, it helps to consider which of these aspects you want to shape your stay: the city’s history and cultural center, the festival program, or archaeological sites in the municipality. If you are planning your travel dates around Fericat or the Festival del Vino de Coyol, check the dates for that year’s edition.
