Dot is associated with the commune of Plaine-du-Nord, whose landscape and cultural themes broaden the perspective beyond the search for a vacation rental. Coastal areas, rivers, pilgrimage traditions, and sugarcane processing represent different focuses for a stay. If you are looking for a vacation rental in Dot, you can consider whether you are more interested in natural features, religious history, or local production.

Coastal Landscapes and Rivers

Coastal deposits and landscapes cover the lower-lying part of the commune of Plaine-du-Nord. They cover all of the sections of 2ème Baisse-Plaine and 4ème Bassin-Diamant, the southern part of 1ère Morne-Rouge, and the northern part of 3ème Grand-Boucan. The landscape includes fringing coral reefs, marine plains, and unconsolidated material. The rivers also shape the view of the commune: Gallois, Passe coco, and Haut-du-Cap are among the waterways that flow through Plaine-du-Nord.

Pilgrimage Traditions and History

The Grotte de Saint Jacques in Grand Boucan is a natural site, a pilgrimage destination, and a place where Vodou offerings are made. Its significance brings nature and religious tradition together at a named location. At Bassin Saint-Jacques, pilgrims organize cultural events every year that can last up to three weeks. Outside the main annual festival, visits and ceremonies take place there every Thursday.

Every year on July 24, the commune of Plaine-du-Nord draws thousands of pilgrims for a pilgrimage in honor of Saint-Jacques Majeur and Sainte Anne. Saint-Jacques is also the commune’s patron saint; his feast is celebrated the following day, July 25. The pilgrimage on July 24 and the patron saint’s feast on July 25 are therefore two consecutive but distinct dates on the commune’s calendar.

Boïs-Caïman is located in Morne Rouge and is associated with an important historical event: the ceremony led by Boukman took place there on the night of August 13–14, 1793. The history of the commune goes back further still. Plaine-du-Nord was founded in the 18th century and elevated to the status of quartier in 1821.

Sugarcane and Local Production

Another way to explore the commune’s history is through sugarcane processing. In 2012, Patrick St-Surin restarted the family guildiverie and began processing sugarcane into syrup and clairin again. The ÉCONOMUSÉE® du guildivier is located in the center of Plaine-du-Nord, at the foot of the Montagnes Noires massif.

The visitor experience includes sugarcane fields to explore and processing that can be observed in the sugarcane shed. It also includes juice, sugarcane to chew, and clairin to taste. Craft production and its products are thus presented together. If you are planning a visit to the Grotte de Saint Jacques or the ÉCONOMUSÉE, check the respective visiting arrangements and opening hours in advance.
