A walk along the coast on the sandy beach at Praia de Niquim takes about an hour to reach a lagoon that is usually full of flamingos, pelicans and other birds. This route cannot be travelled by car. The walk to the lagoon offers a different focus from the description of the beach itself: the approximate walking time and the time spent on foot in the sand matter for the walk, while the dunes define the coastal landscape.

Varela and its varied coastal scenery

In the wider surrounding region, a long unpaved road in Varela, with houses on both sides, leads all the way to the sea. A 2018 travel guide describes this route; check current road conditions beforehand if you plan to use it for navigation.

In the immediate vicinity of the destination is Praia dos Pescadores, at the entrance to Varela. The beach has a rocky stretch and a waterside area where you have to walk many metres into the water before the seabed drops away beneath your feet. Shore conditions can vary. Also nearby is Praia de Varela: several kilometres of white sand, warm water and trees reaching almost to the sea characterise this beach. By comparison, Praia dos Pescadores is defined by its rocky stretch and shallow shore, while Praia de Varela is characterised by its long sandy beach and trees by the water.

A marine museum in Varela-Iale

In the immediate vicinity of the destination, Varela-Iale has a small marine museum run by the NGO AD – Acção para o Desenvolvimento. It is part of the local environmental school. If you would like to include the museum in your plans, check in advance whether a visit is possible.
