The Surami Fortress stands in the northern part of the city on a rocky hill on the left bank of the Suramula River. The complex comprises a defensive wall, the fortress, St. George Church, and a palace. The site is divided into an inner citadel and a lower courtyard.
Culture
St. George Church within the Surami Fortress was built in the 11th and 12th centuries. Surami is also home to a memorial house museum dedicated to the Ukrainian poet and writer Lesia Ukrainka. It is housed in a 19th-century building and displays literary collections, manuscripts, documents, artworks, numismatic material, photographs, and ethnographic objects.
The Ascension Church in Surami is classified as a monument from the feudal period. The Deity Church in Surami is dated to 1831. A sightseeing route through Surami begins at the Surami Fortress on the summit of the mountain and also includes Kviratskhoveli Church, Itria Convent, Chumaleti St. George Church, and the synagogue.
History
Surami is a mountain resort situated at an altitude of 740 meters above sea level on the southern slopes of the Likhi Range. Archaeological evidence indicates that the area around Surami has been inhabited since the Early Bronze Age. In the 1780s and 1790s, the Surami Fortress in Upper Kartli served as an important outpost against raids from Dagestan.
An east–west trade route ran through Surami, connecting India with Phasis, now known as Poti.
