Nature

Libani is located in the Borjomi Gorge on a densely forested plateau. The site of the Libani Sanatorium is situated 1,368 metres above sea level.

The Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park covers more than 85,000 hectares of primeval forest and alpine meadows and contains a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Culture and history

The Libani Sanatorium is associated with the architect Mikhail Kalashnikov. The Georgian scientist Nikoloz Gegechkori contributed to the construction of the Libani Sanatorium and later became its director. The former building of the Libani Sanatorium was granted cultural monument status in 2017. The Libani Sanatorium was an important early centre in the fight against tuberculosis.

Construction of the Borjomi-Bakuriani railway began in 1897; the railway entered service in 1902.

Trails and activities

The Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park has an extensive network of twelve trails through ancient forests. Hiking, horseback riding, cycling, snowshoeing, as well as cultural and educational tours are offered there. Tourist shelters, picnic areas and campsites are arranged along the routes.

The Nikoloz Romanov’s Trail is a three-day, 43 km route that can be travelled on foot and on horseback from the Likani River Valley through the Lomismta Mountains to the Marelisi ranger station. It passes through coniferous and mixed forests and offers spectacular views of the Caucasus from the Lomi St. Giorgi Church.

The Footprint Trail offers views of the Mariamtsminda Church, passes through areas where rare yew species listed in the Red List can be seen, and ends in the Kvabiskhevi Valley.

Practical information

The cycling tour on the Nikoloz Romanov’s Trail is 11 km long, difficult, and has an elevation gain of 1,200 metres. Registration at the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park visitor centre is required before starting the route. After registration, the drive to the Likani Valley follows an unpaved road to the starting point. The route description recommends bringing a first-aid kit, water and spare parts.
