Culture

In the 11th century, Akhalkalaki became the political and economic center of Javakheti. Archaeological excavations uncovered a pre-antique settlement beneath the medieval city of Akhalkalaki. The city walls of Akhalkalaki were built in the 1040s, and archaeologists also identified a crafts district there dating from the 10th to the 13th century.

The history of the place also includes the Transfiguration Church in Akhalkalaki, which dates back to the 10th century, and the Akhalkalaki Local History Museum, which preserves a very old bronze calendar.
