Culture and History

Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Abuli can continue their accommodation search afterwards. Abuli Church is designated in the village as a monument dating from the 10th century, while the Abuli fortified settlement in the surrounding area dates back to the first millennium BC.

Abuli preserves early feudal stone crosses mounted on cubic bases and decorated with Bolnuri medallions and flower crosses. A seasonal shepherd settlement on the shore of the village lake dates from the prehistoric and early feudal periods. An inscription in Asomtavruli is carved beside a window in the western wall of the Georgian church of Abuli. Two further church remains have been preserved in Abuli, although their dating has not been established with certainty. An Armenian church was built in 1884.

On a small rocky hill at the western edge of Abuli, sarcophagi carved into the rock have been preserved. East of Abuli lies a Bronze Age cemetery on the site of the present-day cemetery. A settlement mound on the southern edge of Abuli preserves traces of fortification walls; large clay vessels from the Late Bronze Age have also been found in the Abuli area.

Surb Astvatsatsin was built from finely hewn tuff and has a three-nave floor plan. The western entrance is decorated with a cornice, and an Armenian inscription is located above the entrance. Abuli Fortress has a western and an eastern entrance, as well as two semicircular and three rectangular towers. Outside the fortress, terraced rooms are arranged on the eastern slope, while a spring lies in the southern section.

The Javakheti Protected Areas include Javakheti National Park and five managed reserves.

Mountains and Trails

The Abuli Cyclopean Fortress is a high-altitude megalithic site on Mount Patara Abuli at an elevation of approximately 2,700 metres. Access is via a steep path of grass and scree. The fortress includes dry-stone walls, an inner fortress, storage stations and around 40 stables.

The foot of Didi Abuli can be reached by an off-road vehicle. From there, the ascent takes approximately two hours on foot. The hiking season on Didi Abuli extends through spring, summer and autumn. The weather can change several times a day.
