Tetritsqaro is a small town nestled in mountains covered with mixed forests.

Culture

The Tetritsqaro Local History Museum houses up to 11,000 exhibits dating from the Eneolithic period to the 20th century. These include archaeological finds, paintings, graphic works, sculptures, numismatic collections and ethnographic material; the collection also includes an ancient four-wheeled chariot.

Archaeological excavations in Tetritsqaro uncovered settlements from the Eneolithic and Early Bronze Age. Most of the archaeological material recovered there belongs to the early phase of the Kura-Araxes culture. The foundations of round and rectangular stone houses have also been preserved.

The Church of St. Nicholas was built between 1840 and 1847 and was known as a regimental church. A historical description compares its architecture with that of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Tetritsqaro’s main water source today was built after 1847.

The historic village of Garisi once stood on the site of Tetritsqaro; the Pirghebuli monastery complex is designated as a surviving relic there. The settlement’s name changed four times before the name Tetritsqaro was adopted in 1940. Tetritsqaro is described as having been inhabited since antiquity and, at the same time, as a place that was repeatedly devastated and revived throughout its history.

Theatre activities have taken place in Tetritsqaro’s Culture & Recreation Park since the 19th century. The first opera performance in the history of Georgia took place in Tetritsqaro in December 1837.

The ruins of the ancient city of Samshvilde lie 15 kilometres from Tetritsqaro. Samshvilde was settled in the 4th to 3rd centuries BC; visitors can explore moss-covered ruins and traces of an ancient water supply system there. Nearby Pitareti has an active monastery.

Nature

Tetritsqaro has pleasantly cool summers. The winters are harsh, with heavy snowfall and intense frost.

Nearby, in Tetritsqaro Municipality, Lipi Lake offers opportunities for picnics, fishing and overnight stays in tents. The lake is surrounded by forests, heathland and fields.

Hiking

The nearby Birtvisi Fortress was carved out of a naturally steep rock massif. The nearby Khrami Gorge contains canyons, caves and old churches. The nearby Muguti Caves form a network of 26 caves, most of which date from the Late Bronze Age.
