Omalo is the centre of Tusheti, a protected mountain region with alpine meadows, birch and pine forests, glacial lakes, mineral springs and rivers rich in trout. Culture and History

Omalo is divided into Upper Omalo, Keselo Castle and Lower Omalo. Old Omalo was built near Keselo Castle in the 18th century and is listed in Georgia as one of the intangible cultural heritage monuments of national importance. The Omalo Ethnographic Museum operates in the Keselo fortress. Tushetoba has been celebrated annually in Omalo in July or August since 1970 and is associated with sheep farming. Omalo is also home to a visitors’ centre for the protected areas.

Nature and Hiking

The Tusheti Protected Areas offer 11 hiking trails lasting from one to six days, as well as hiking tours. The Omalo–Atsunta–Shatili route begins in Omalo, initially follows a forest path to the Ghele Pass, then descends into the Alazani Valley and reaches Dartlo. The route from Omalo to Jvarboseli is 22.5 kilometres long and may include a hiking trail over the Ghele Pass, Mount Gogorata and the Makratela Range.

Getting There

Transport from Kvemo Alvani to Omalo is possible only by off-road vehicle. The road over the Abano Pass is generally open from the end of May to October and closed for six months due to heavy snowfall. The difficult road over the Abano Pass to Tusheti takes at least four hours by 4WD vehicle; it is usually open from the end of May to September and closed outside this period due to heavy snowfall.

Traditional Cuisine

The traditional production of Guda cheese involves milking sheep first in summer. Kagi is made by salting and sun-drying sheep, beef, goat or game meat.
