Etseri: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture

Katskhi Column is a 40-metre-high rock with the ruins of two small churches on its upper platform. A Georgian Asomtavruli inscription dating to the 13th century was found in the ruins. The rock pillar is also currently described as climbable by anyone.

Katskhi Temple was built in the early 11th century; most of its construction took place between 1010 and 1014. Katskhi Temple has six apses in its temple structure and dome.

From Chiatura, Mghvimevi Mothers’ Monastery can be reached via a long staircase and then through an artificial tunnel. The monastery contains a two-nave Savior’s Basilica with richly carved façades and a painted wooden iconostasis.

History

The Katskhi Settlements in the village of Katskhi, in the municipality of Chiatura, date back to the Stone Age. Archaeologists found around 2,300 household items, tools and military weapons there. The archaeological remains around Katskhi, including Sakhoria and Sarbi, cover 4 to 4.5 hectares.

Nature

Mghvimevi Monastery stands on a high cliff in the Kvirila River valley. The path to the church leads up the cliff, through the monastery courtyard and to the main cave. This main cave is 35 metres deep, and its entrance is 20 to 22 metres wide. The Church of St. Catherine at Mghvimevi Monastery is carved entirely into the cliff.

There is a passenger shelter at the entrance to the village of Ets’eri.
