History

The Gonio-Apsaros architectural and archaeological complex is one of the oldest and best-preserved Roman defensive fortresses in Georgia. Gonio-Apsaros Fortress has a rectangular ground plan measuring 222 metres by 195 metres and is protected by 18 defensive towers, including four main towers at the corners.

Archaeological excavations at Gonio-Apsaros have uncovered Roman baths, a water supply system, military buildings, residential areas, roads, and a sewage system. The oldest archaeological layer discovered at Gonio-Apsaros dates from the 13th to the 7th century BC.

In 1974, a hoard of unique goldsmith artefacts dating from the 2nd to 3rd century AD was discovered near Gonio-Apsaros. According to certain ecclesiastical traditions, the burial place of the Apostle Matthias is said to be located in Gonio-Apsaros.

The Gonio-Apsaros Museum-Reserve allows visitors to explore the fortress walls, towers, archaeological excavation areas, museum exhibits, and artefacts. Guided tours at Gonio Fortress are offered in Georgian, Russian, and English.
