Machakhlispiri lies 70 meters above sea level at the beginning of the 45-kilometer-long Machakhela Gorge. The gorge begins in Machakhlispiri and follows the Machakhela River. Nature

The Machakhela Protected Landscape is located in the Machakhela Valley and covers 4,292 hectares. The Machakhela Gorge is surrounded by forested mountains. The Machakhela Protected Landscape is characterized by picturesque views, waterfalls, biodiversity, historical and cultural monuments, local traditions, and folklore.

The gorge has a deeply incised, mountainous relief with narrow, deep valleys formed by the Machakhela River and tributaries of the Acharistsqali. In total, 7,333.18 hectares of the Machakhela municipality area lie within Machakhela National Park.

Culture

Traditional beekeeping in Machakhela is passed down from ancestors to descendants. The production area with a geographical indication for Machakhela Honey includes Machakhlispiri, Kedkedi, Acharistskali, Chkhutuneti, and Chikuneti. Machakhela Honey is made from nectar collected from plants in the Machakhela Gorge. There are four varieties: May, acacia, chestnut, and linden.

The Tskhemlara Bridge is the largest of the centuries-old arch bridges in the Machakhela Valley. The Upper Chkhutuneti Historical & Ethnographic Museum is located within Machakhela National Park.

Things to Do

The Dunga Waterfall Trail is an easy 1-kilometer, 30-minute hike from the village center of Upper Chkhutuneti. The Machakhela Wine History Trail connects Chonchkho Winepress, Mere Winepress, and Dzneladze Winepress. As a hike, it is 1.3 kilometers long, takes one hour, and has a moderate difficulty level.

The kayaking route on the Machakhela River has difficulty ratings ranging from 3 to 4. In the villages of the Machakhela Valley, visitors can walk, ride horses, or cycle.

Getting There

The road through the Machakhela villages is paved and accessible year-round. However, in winters with heavy snowfall, traffic may be interrupted for one or two days. Scheduled minibuses operate from the Machakhela villages toward Batumi. The starting point of the Machakhela kayaking route in Zeda Chkhutuneti is best reached by SUV.
