Khelvachauri: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Machakhela Gun Road is a marked historical and cultural route in Khelvachauri. Along this route, visitors can stay in or visit Kveda Chkhutuneti, Zeda Chkhutuneti and Kostanet, try national dishes and learn about the activities of local households. In Machakhela National Park, the Mtavarangelozi Trail is 9 km long and takes around four hours.

Nature

The administration and visitor centre of Machakhela National Park are located in the village of Acharisaghmarti in Khelvachauri Municipality. Visitors entering the reserve zone of Machakhela National Park must make an arrangement with the administration at least five working days before a tour in order to obtain a pass.

Machakhela National Park features forests on the slopes around the Machakhela River and includes relict forest species such as Colchian boxwood, chestnut and hazelnut. Mirveti contains an endangered avenue of Kolkhuri boxwood, which is listed in the Red Book. The Kokoleti viewpoint offers views of Turkey’s Jamili Biosphere Reserve and six villages of historic Upper Machakhela. Rafting is possible on the Chorokhi and Adjaristskali rivers in the area around Mirveti.

Culture

Cultural heritage attractions in Khelvachauri Municipality include the ancient fortresses of Gonio and Gvara, Chkhutuneti Fortress with a 32-metre-long tunnel, and the Mirveti and Tskhemlara arch bridges. Tskhemlara Bridge is designated as an immovable cultural monument.

Makho Bridge was selected as an immovable cultural monument of national significance in 2007. Adjaristskali Bridge was built in 1892 and historically connected the Batumi–Ardagani road.

The Machakhela Historical-Ethnographic Museum is housed in a former three-storey mosque. It displays a wooden carved ornament from the 18th century whose colours have been preserved. The Lazur Ethnographic Museum houses works by Khasan Helimish as well as ethnographic exhibits from Lazur that have been preserved by local people over the years.

Traditional mchadi is highlighted as a local dish associated with Khelvachauri.
