Machara: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Machara is listed among the open settlements discussed in the Aeneolithic archaeological record of Abkhazia. The Machara settlement is described as a settlement of the Aeneolithic period and the Early Bronze Age; the archaeological culture associated with it is dated to the fifth millennium BC.

Culture and History

A radiocarbon date from wood remains in Layer IV of the Machara settlement is 3810±90. The archaeological settlement group to which Machara belongs contains documented materials made of stone, flint, and ceramics. Machara is also listed among the terraced settlements where pickaxe-like and hoe-shaped tools have been associated with agricultural activity.

Spiritual Sites

The Elizaveta Center contains the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The Elizaveta Tourist-Pilgrimage Center in Machara is 700 meters from the sea. It is located in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains near Sukhum and in the vicinity of Machara.

The elevated center offers views of Mount Anakopia. The list of the Elizaveta Tourist-Pilgrimage Center includes a pilgrimage excursion to Mount Anacopia and the grotto of Simon the Canaanite.

An unpaved road leads from the turnoff near Merheul to the Olginskiye waterfalls. The route takes about 30 minutes from the turnoff at the traffic police station in Machara.
