Ogooué-Maritime: Delta, Coast and History

Ogooué-Maritime brings together the river environment of the lower Ogooué Delta and the coastal landscapes of Parc National de Loango. In the delta, several river channels flow through numerous estuaries into the Atlantic; Loango includes beaches, coastal dune systems, lagoons and plains with an exceptionally diverse array of wildlife. In Omboué, the history of the Sainte-Anne du Fernan Vaz mission adds another dimension. The Ogooué Delta and its habitats

The lower Ogooué Delta is a coastal sedimentary basin where several river channels flow through numerous estuaries into the Atlantic. Together with the middle and upper sections farther upstream, it forms Africa’s third-largest delta complex, after the Nile and Niger deltas. This ranking applies to the entire delta system, not just the lower coastal section. The complex includes freshwater, brackish-water and terrestrial habitats, which are in a very good state of conservation. Two scales are therefore worth considering when viewing the landscape: the coastal basin and the larger system that continues upstream.

Boat traffic is also part of the Ogooué Delta. Commercial and non-commercial boats operate on the delta, carrying passengers and goods from Port-Gentil to Lambaréné or Omboué. Mission history in Omboué

The Sainte-Anne du Fernan Vaz mission was founded in Omboué on 7 March 1887 by Spiritan missionaries. Its metal church was built in the workshops of Gustave Eiffel. The exact date places this history in the late 19th century, while the metal church adds an architectural dimension. Alongside its landscapes and wildlife, Ogooué-Maritime therefore also offers a specific cultural-historical point of interest.
