Atolls, passes and unusual island landscapes give the Tuamotus Islands a distinctive natural profile. The Garuae Pass on Fakarava is 1,600 meters wide and is described as the widest pass in French Polynesia. Rangiroa is a large atoll in the South Pacific, about 350 kilometers northeast of Tahiti. These geographic landmarks lead to very different landscapes and experiences.

Passes and Snorkeling Spots on Rangiroa and Fakarava

On Rangiroa, two passes lie on opposite coasts: Tiputa Pass is on the west coast and is considered the island’s leading dive site; Avatoru Pass is on the east coast. Near Tiputa Pass is “The Aquarium,” a snorkeling spot with calm, crystal-clear waters rich in marine life. It is suitable for snorkelers of all experience levels.

Fakarava also offers striking pass landscapes. Tumakohu Pass is known for sharks such as gray, blacktip, whitetip and hammerhead sharks, as well as groupers and Napoleon fish. Garuae Pass offers a different highlight: its width of 1,600 meters and its description as the widest pass in French Polynesia make it a distinctive geographic landmark. The two passes show how differently an island’s landscape can be explored along its coasts and through its channels.

On Rangiroa, boat trips lead to remote motus. There, you can swim and snorkel or enjoy a picnic by the water. These trips combine time on the water with stays on the motus—another way to experience the islands than visiting the dive and snorkeling spots.

Birdlife, Lagoon and Island Landscape

Seen from the air, Tikehau forms a ring of white and pink sand around a bright blue lagoon. Blue and brown noddies, red-footed boobies and lesser frigatebirds are found on the island. The landscape and birdlife offer two specific perspectives on the atoll: the shape of the lagoon and the birds that live there.

Ahe has primary forest. Makatea, in turn, brings together several features of its landscape: a hiking trail leads to former phosphate mining pits, some of which are 90 feet deep. There are freshwater caves inland; in Makatea’s sea caves, visitors can bathe in freshwater pools. Those particularly interested in caves, pits and the island’s striking landforms will find different points of interest here than at the lagoons and passes of Rangiroa or Fakarava.

Pearl Farms and Winery

Visitors are welcomed at most of Manihi’s pearl farms to learn how pearls are made. This insight into pearl production adds a craft-related dimension to the islands’ nature experiences. On Rangiroa, Domaine Dominique Auroy is considered the only winery on an atoll and the only winery in French Polynesia. The two places offer distinct highlights: Manihi for an insight into pearl production, and Rangiroa for its unique distinction as a wine-growing destination.

Another Perspective in the Wider Destination of The Tuamotu And Gambier Islands

The wider destination of The Tuamotu And Gambier Islands also includes the Gambier Islands, with their own distinct landscapes. The lagoon shared by all the islands of the Gambier Archipelago has transparent turquoise water and coral reefs; the sea contrasts with the lush green mountains. On Mangareva, hiking trails lead into the mountains and offer views of the lagoon and the landscape beyond. Rikitea is Mangareva’s main village.

The religious architectural history of the Gambier Islands is also part of this wider context: between 1840 and 1970, missionaries, supported by islanders who had converted to Christianity shortly beforehand, built hundreds of religious structures. These include churches, rectories, monasteries, schools and watchtowers. Most can be visited on Mangareva, Akamaru, Aukena and Taravai.

Choose a Vacation Rental Based on Your Travel Interests

When looking for a vacation rental, your preferred focus for the trip is a useful starting point. Would you most like to experience passes and snorkeling spots, discover the lagoon landscape and birdlife, or explore Makatea’s caves and former phosphate mining pits? Plan around the places and topics that appeal to you most. This way, the experiences you want to shape your trip remain part of your decision when choosing where to stay.
