Okhtyrka offers several starting points for planning a trip: its location on the Vorskla, a church ensemble comprising three buildings, and themed city routes. The landscape, architectural history, and culture each offer a different focus. When looking for a holiday rental in Okhtyrka, consider which of these you would like to shape your stay.

Rivers, a lake, and regional orientation

Okhtyrka lies on the left bank of the Vorskla. The Okhtyrka and Gusinka rivers also flow through the city, and Green Lake is located in the center. The city belongs to the forest-steppe zone. Together, these features describe Okhtyrka on different scales: from the river courses within the city to the broader natural region.

The regional orientation is also specific: Okhtyrka lies at the center of a triangle formed by the regional capitals of Sumy, Kharkiv, and Poltava. This means the city's landscape features and its regional setting can be considered as two distinct perspectives when planning your trip.

An ensemble built across several periods

The ensemble of the Holy Protection and Intercession Cathedral comprises the cathedral itself, the Church of the Nativity of Christ, and the Vvedenska Bell Tower Church. The cathedral was built between 1753 and 1768, the Church of the Nativity of Christ between 1774 and 1828, and the bell tower church between 1774 and 1784. These dates show that the ensemble took shape over several building phases. The cathedral is an architectural monument of national significance and is one of the “Seven Wonders of Sumy Oblast.”

Another dated religious building is the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, which dates from 1905 and is also an architectural monument of national significance. The former municipal power station at 3 Nezalezhnosti Street is also part of the city's historic architecture. These different buildings give visitors several specific historical points of reference for exploring the city, rather than focusing on a single building.

City routes with different themes

One route is titled “Okhtyrka – City of Cossack and Hussar Glory.” It connects the City Museum of Local Lore, Nezalezhnosti Street, the Avenue of Cossack and Hussar Glory, St. George's Church, and the Cossack Well. The title and stops give this route its own historical focus.

The “Along Cossack Paths” city route leads, among other places, to St. Michael's Church, the Avenue of Cossack and Hussar Glory, the Church of the Dormition, the Museum of Local Lore, St. Nicholas Church, the Market Square, the Transfiguration Church, the Holy Protection and Intercession Cathedral, the Cossack Well, and the Holy Trinity Monastery. A literary and artistic route can be completed on foot or by bus. Another walking or bus route passes the Church of the Women of the Holy Sepulchre, the Museum of Local Lore, Green Lake, the cathedral ensemble, and the Transfiguration Church. The routes thus offer different thematic ways of arranging a visit to the city; they should be understood as route descriptions, not as a promise that a guided tour is currently available.

City museum and trip planning

The City Museum of Local Lore has existed as an independent municipal institution since 1995. Its collection comprises almost 10,000 museum objects. Permanent exhibitions include “Fauna of the Forests of Okhtyrka,” “History of Okhtyrka,” and “Our Region During the Second World War.” The subjects therefore range from forest wildlife to the history of the city and region.

If you are traveling with children, these clearly distinct themes can help structure your plans together: landscape features, dated churches, and the different route titles each offer a different perspective on Okhtyrka. You can use these as a starting point when choosing a holiday rental and consider whether you would like to focus mainly on architectural history, the routes, or the landscape during your stay.
