Ostroh can be explored through two distinctive themes: the architectural history of Castle Hill and the history of books and printing. Castle Hill lies on the southeastern edge of the historic old town, on a natural hill on the high left bank of the Viliia River. Defensive architecture, church and Jewish history, and museums offer different ways to discover the city. When choosing a holiday apartment for your stay, these interests can help you decide what to focus on during your explorations.

Castle Hill: Fortifications and Architectural History

The Ostroh castle complex dates from the 14th to the 19th century. It was built on the site of an ancient Rus’ hillfort dating from the 11th to the 12th century. In the mid-14th century, Prince Danylo Ostrozkyi had the damaged structures restored and the stone donjon, the Murowana Tower, built. The tower dates from the 14th century and is described as the oldest stone structure on Castle Hill; today it houses a local history museum. There are four architectural monuments on Castle Hill.

The church on Castle Hill is also part of this layered history. Two different dates are given for its construction: the mid-15th century or, according to another study, the first half of the 16th century. The Epiphany Church was integrated into the castle’s defensive system. Its north wall was incorporated into the castle wall and had two rows of loopholes. Its architecture thus clearly illustrates the connection between a religious building and a castle fortification. The church also had dynastic significance: it served as a family church and burial place for many members of the Ostrozkyi princely dynasty, including Vasyl-Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi.

Religious Buildings and City History

The Ostroh Synagogue was built in the 17th century and is described as one of the oldest synagogues in Eastern Europe. The Great Synagogue is a monument of Jewish religious architecture in the city’s former Jewish quarter. It was a cultural and educational center for the Jewish community. This historic role gives the building a different significance from the churches on Castle Hill and adds the Jewish community’s story to the picture of Ostroh’s history.

Book History and Themed Explorations

The Museum of Books and Printing is located in the 16th-century Lutsk Gate Tower. Its exhibitions cover the history of books and printing from Kyivan Rus’ to the present day. The site thus brings together a historic building and a subject that spans many centuries.

A guided tour of the Museum of the History of Ostroh Academy includes a range of other stops: the history of the university, the underground rooms of the Capuchin monastery, the Church of Saint Fedir Ostrozkyi, an exhibition of old printed books, the history of the present-day academy buildings, an underground art gallery, the university park, and the library. Museum visits are by prior appointment. Tours on weekends and public holidays must be booked during the working week, no later than Friday at 2 p.m. Check the current visiting arrangements directly before planning your visit.

For a tour of the city, there are also the Ostrozhyky figurines, placed at 25 locations in Ostroh. A quest developed for tourists leads to significant places around the city. The figurines and quest provide specific stops for exploring the city, while the museums offer deeper insights into particular themes. The Ostroh Tourist Information Center provides information about attractions in the community and its surroundings, excursion routes, museum offerings, as well as tourist maps and information materials. If you plan to make use of these resources, ask there directly about the current services.

When choosing accommodation, consider which themes you would most like to shape your stay: the defensive and architectural history of Castle Hill, religious buildings and Jewish history, or the history of books and education. This way, you can plan your trip around the discoveries that interest you in Ostroh, rather than treating all the stops as similar attractions.
