Klewan: Parkland and Architectural History
Accommodation in Klewan
In Klewan, landscape and architectural history come together as two distinct aspects of the town: the central Klevan Park is a historic garden, while castle ruins and churches tell the story of different historical building periods. This combination gives your choice of destination a clear focus—nature, architecture, or both.
Park and Oaks in the Town Center
Klevan Park is located in the central part of Klewan. It is a historic garden of local significance and part of the Rivne Oblast Nature Reserve Fund. Oaks of different ages grow there; some trees are estimated to be around 250 to 300 years old. This range of ages makes the tree population a distinctive natural feature. For a trip that includes landscapes as well as buildings, the park is a destination in its own right.
Klevan Castle on the Riverbank
The surviving ruins belong to the castle of the Czartoryski princes, which dates to 1475. In the second half of the 15th century, Prince Fedir Czartoryski, Starosta of Lutsk, restored the castle. It stood on a promontory above the river called Horodyshche and was surrounded by a deep moat fed by the Stubla River. A four-arch bridge on sturdy supports crossed the moat; traces of its fresco decoration were still visible at the beginning of the 20th century. The promontory, moat, and bridge give the castle’s history a tangible architectural and landscape setting, beyond its date.
Churches: Building Periods and Architecture
The Church of the Nativity of Christ shows how a building changed over several phases. It was built in 1777 near the family castle for the Uniate congregation. A stone bell tower was added in 1842. In 1862, the church received a wooden dome, and the roof covering was also changed. Between 1882 and 1884, it was richly painted. Its building history thus spans the original church construction, later alterations, and the painted decoration.
The Church of the Annunciation presents a different architectural emphasis. It is a three-aisled basilica with an altar apse and a narthex; its main façade has two rectangular, two-storey towers. The three aisles divide the church interior, the altar apse marks its end at the altar, and the narthex is the entrance vestibule. This description thus links the layout of the interior with the building’s exterior form. Two completion dates are recorded for the early history of the new church building: 1610 or 1630. A foundation recorded in 1590 was for an Orthodox church that was wooden at the time; according to another account, it referred to the Church of the Annunciation.
