Myrhorod: Hohol, the spa park and the birch grove
Accommodation in Myrhorod
Myrhorod brings together literary heritage, a spa park and a protected birch grove. Around the pond, you’ll encounter references to Mykola Hohol; the spa town also offers architecture and seasonal activities. The O. Slastion Museum of Local History adds permanent and temporary exhibitions to the town’s cultural attractions. When looking for a holiday apartment, these different highlights can help you plan your days around culture, nature or changing experiences.
Hohol, Cossacks and history in the townscape
A monument to the Cossacks of Myrhorod stands in Cossack Glory Square. The square was laid out in 2007 and is also the starting point of the “Unforgettable Pages of the History of the Myrhorod Region” route, which passes through Myrhorod. The route and the monument highlight different aspects: Cossack history in one place, and the history of the region, which unfolds along the route through town, in another.
Another focal point is the pond. A promenade was created along its shore for Hohol’s 200th birthday on 1 April 2009; sculptures of literary characters from Hohol’s works stand along the promenade. The monument to Hohol is on Hohol Street, near the pond, and was ceremonially unveiled on 18 September 2008. As a permanent public monument, it complements the sculptures on the promenade with a dedicated place of remembrance.
The entrance arch to the spa park also provides a tangible architectural link to the town’s history: it was built in 1935 to a design by architect Arkadii Langman. Together with the monuments erected later, it points to different dates and themes in the town’s history, without reducing them to a single place or period.
Birch grove and seasonal experiences
The “Berezovyi hai” birch grove, part of the spa town, was established in 1934 and is now a landscape reserve of regional importance. Its significance to the landscape is also reflected in the seasonal leisure activities offered there: in summer, horseback rides and horse-drawn wagon rides follow paths through the birch grove; in winter, visitors can go on sleigh rides. This contrast highlights the different seasonal options; availability may change, so check what is currently offered in advance.
The spa town also offers a scavenger hunt about its history, which includes a visit to the folk museum. Dates may vary. If you plan to take part, check when it is available before your visit rather than assuming it is a fixed part of every stay.
Museum and travel information
The O. Slastion Museum of Local History has been located at 2 Nesaleszhnosti Street since 1996. Four halls are devoted to permanent exhibitions, while two more host temporary exhibitions. The museum offers guided tours and runs themed programs. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check the latest visitor arrangements.
