Vylkove combines waterways within the town with excursions into the floodplain landscape and a distinctive cultural profile. Boats make it possible to get around the city, while pedestrian footbridges run along the canals; churches of different traditions, a monument to a Lipovan and local cuisine featuring fish dishes add to the experience. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: should it be shaped more by nature and water, architecture or regional cuisine? These interests lead to different questions when planning your days.

Waterways and Excursions

Boats are one way to get around Vylkove. Pedestrian footbridges run along the canals; some can be opened to allow boats to pass. This means you can choose footbridges for routes along the canals and boats for getting around town.

In the surrounding area, a boat trip offers views of the floodplain landscape and can take you as far as the “Kilometer Zero” at the mouth of the Danube where it meets the Black Sea. Its focus is therefore on the landscape and the river mouth, while boats in the town mainly reveal the canals as transport routes. Check in advance whether such a trip is available on your preferred date.

In the wider region, the itinerary continues after the meal with an excursion into the Danube Delta; it passes through an area that partly borders the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The three scales can be distinguished when planning: routes around town, a nearby trip with views of the floodplains, and a broader excursion into the delta. This lets you decide whether to devote more of a day to the townscape or the landscape.

Churches and Local History

The visitor centre of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve is in central Vylkove, at 4 Petra Sahaidachnoho Street. Its exhibitions cover information, environmental education, natural history and local history. If you plan to visit, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

Vylkove is home to the Old Believer Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. Historic buildings also include the Orthodox Church of St Nicholas and the St Nicholas Old Believer Church. The architecture of the Orthodox Church of St Nicholas combines Baroque and modern styles.

The Old Believer Church of St Nicholas the Wonderworker stands where the Starostambulskyi branch, which carries water year-round, meets the Bilhorodskyi branch in the city. For visitors arriving by water, the church is visible from the Danube. A monument to a Lipovan also stands in St Nicholas Square.

Local Cuisine as a Travel Interest

Vylkove’s local cuisine includes stuffed peppers, cabbage rolls filled with fish instead of meat, and fish soup served in cups. Salamur sauce and “Novak” wine are also part of it. Fish features in different preparations: as a filling in cabbage rolls and in the soup. Together with the other dishes mentioned, this offers a specific culinary focus alongside the waterways and churches. If regional food culture matters to your travel decision, this selection can help you plan around your interests.
