Zashkiv has a distinct cultural and historical focus. The first written mention of the town dates back to 1377; the Yevhen Konovalets Museum adds an exhibition on biography, contemporary history and remembrance to this local history. The early mention and the biographical exhibition offer different points in time to explore. When choosing a holiday rental, this focus can be a practical consideration: Zashkiv offers points of interest for a stay in which local history and museum themes play a role. The church and monument add further named cultural sites to this perspective.

The exhibition at the Yevhen Konovalets Museum

The exhibition spans four rooms. The first focuses on his childhood and youth. The second displays original artefacts relating to his military activities from 1917 to 1920, as well as aspects of the Ukrainian liberation movement. The third room is devoted to the First Congress of Ukrainian Nationalists, at which the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) was founded. The final section covers his death on 23 May 1938 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Childhood and death thus frame the biography, while the two middle rooms cover military activities, the liberation movement and the founding of the OUN.

The museum’s collection also includes items from family life: a family icon of Saint Teresa, a napkin embroidered by his mother, his father’s armchair and furniture from his apartment in Rome. These items differ from the original artefacts in the second room: they relate to family and home life, while the second room covers military activities and aspects of the liberation movement. Alongside its military and organisational themes, the museum collection thus offers a personal perspective through family belongings.

The Yevhen Konovalets Historical Memorial Museum holds annual memorial events for Yevhen Konovalets on 23 May and 14 June. 23 May is also the date of his death, which the final section of the exhibition covers. A biographical reference and a recurring memorial event thus fall on the same calendar date; 14 June is another annual date for a memorial event. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, confirm the specific date in advance.

A 2021 interview with the tourism office states that the living room, study, kitchen and bedroom are open to visitors. Before your trip, check whether these rooms are currently accessible if visiting them is important to your plans.

Church and monument in Zashkiv

Zashkiv is also home to the Church of the Archangel Michael, built in 1906; its grounds include a wooden bell tower. A monument to Yevhen Konovalets stands not far from the museum. The museum, church and monument offer different cultural and historical perspectives: a biographical exhibition, a church building with a bell tower, and a separate monument. These differences can help you decide what to focus on during your stay, whether you are more interested in the museum, the church building or remembrance.
