Knyazhychi lies on the left bank of the Irpin; in the centre of the village, Heroes’ Alley is located beside a mass grave of Second World War soldiers. Other points of interest include the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which opened in 2001, and archaeological settlement and burial sites. Knyazhychi thus brings together various historical connections: remembrance of soldiers, a dated church event, and evidence of earlier settlement. Both its location by the river and the periods and locations associated with these historical connections are important for understanding the village.

Location on the Irpin and road connection

The paved Vasylkiv–Kniazhychi–Luka road is Knyazhychi’s main road. A concrete bridge over the Irpin connects the village with Zhornivka. The river setting and road connection describe two different spatial aspects: Knyazhychi lies on the left bank, while the road links it to Zhornivka via the concrete bridge. For orientation, it is useful to distinguish these relationships: the river setting refers to Knyazhychi itself, while the road and bridge connect two places.

Remembrance and church history

At Heroes’ Alley, its location and commemorative significance go hand in hand: it is in the village centre, beside the mass grave of Second World War soldiers. Unlike the archaeological sites in the southern and southwestern parts of the village, this memorial site has a central location. The historical themes are therefore also distinguished by how they are distributed across the village.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross offers a different perspective on time. It opened in 2001, and the ceremony was led by Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv. This is a clearly dated recent event, compared with the archaeological periods represented in Knyazhychi. Visitors interested in local history can thus compare a specific church opening with the much earlier settlement and burial sites.

Archaeological periods

The archaeological sites are distributed across different parts of the village and date to different periods. The southern part of Knyazhychi is home to a settlement dated to the Bronze Age and the 1st century BC. In the southwestern part of Knyazhychi, another settlement dates from the 11th to the 13th century AD. Within the village, a burial site dating from the 11th to the 15th century AD is also a historical monument; it requires further study. The two medieval periods overlap, but the settlement and burial site are distinct archaeological points of reference. The southern settlement, by contrast, represents a significantly earlier period. This makes it possible to distinguish chronologically between an early settlement site and the medieval sites.

When looking for a holiday apartment, this distinction can help you choose where to stay. Consider whether the location on the Irpin and the central road connection, or Knyazhychi’s varied historical themes, are more important to you. Your travel interests can thus draw on two specific aspects of the village: its geographical setting and its history.
