Vysokyi: Discover Literature and History
Accommodation in Vysokyi
If you are considering Vysokyi for a trip with a cultural focus, you will find points of connection in literature, music and local history. Topics range from Hnat Khotkevych’s biography and museum collection to excursions that explore the history of several places. You can shape your travel plans around whichever of these perspectives interests you most.
Hnat Khotkevych: Biography and Collection
The Hnat Khotkevych Estate is a branch of the Kharkiv Literary Museum and is located in Vysokyi, at 10 Vasyl Stus Street. Visits to the estate are possible by prior arrangement. Please coordinate with the museum before your visit.
The Hnat Khotkevych Museum opened in Vysokyi in 1995, in the house where the writer, historian and art scholar spent the last nine years of his life. These three fields provide a common thread through his biography: you can explore literature, history and art scholarship rather than considering Khotkevych from just one perspective.
The collection includes rare documents, manuscripts, letters, photographs, books and concert posters, as well as musical instruments and sheet music. It also features books by Khotkevych published during his lifetime and Ukrainian translations of works by European authors. Written and printed works sit alongside musical objects, giving the collection several ways to explore his life’s work.
If you are travelling with children, you can use these objects to spark conversations as you prepare together: What is the difference between a manuscript and a printed book? What is a concert poster for? And what questions do musical instruments bring to mind? These concrete topics make it easier to explore the different areas of the collection in advance, without requiring any particular prior knowledge.
Community History and Excursion Topics
The History Museum of the Vysochanska community is located in Vysokyi, in a school building. The museum has also been entrusted with the duties of a tourist information centre; staff tailor the content of tourist routes to travellers’ individual needs. This broadens the cultural perspective beyond individual collection items to include stories that can be explored along tourist routes.
A post dated 6 June 2025 describes excursions where participants discover the history of Babai, Vysokyi, Pokotylivka, Rzhavets and Nova Berezivka. They also learn more about well-known figures from the region, past events and interesting facts. The topics bring together local histories, regional figures and events, without requiring any one place to be the sole focus.
